I like big snakes and I can not lie...

Recommended Posts

I went to the Exotic Wildlife Zoo today and I fell in love... Oh it was so wonderful... It was SO long and felt so good when I held it. :$ That was so nice!! How many of you boys carry around a 97 pound snake with ya? ;) That's what *I* did today! :)
I even saw Turtle today... I guess he was a little hungry.

What did you do this weekend? B|

Well, I didn't feel like driving all the way to San Antonio to go to the zoo, so we went to the exotic 'Snake Farm' down the street. They did have other animals... Watched them feed alligators, met some cute baby lemurs, and even had a monkey moon us... It was weird. Every time you would smile at the monkey, he would turn around, stick his ass in the air, and put his fingers up his butt.. :o:S Fucking wired monkey... :|

I've held one excactly like that, I got to hold it's head, and it made itself comfortable on my arm while someone else carried most of it's body.

Is that an albino ball python (Python regius), by any chance?

Ball pythons are kept as pets, but I'm thinking that they would require a quite big terrarium.:S

Yeah, they are incredibly cool. And fascinating to touch and watch.

:)

I have a picture of just me with the snake, but I didn't think it was too appropriate to post (yea, I know... *ME* saying it isn't appropriate). This snake had a fascination with my boobies (smart snake), so the pic of me shows him resting his head on my boobs. :S:D He was a heavy guy, but very docile.

This guy's 'terranium' is the inside part of the zoo. When people are there, the employees watch to make sure he isn't getting mishandled or stepped on, but otherwise, he just chills out where he can.

Outside the 'snake habitats' and actually outdoors, they had chickens, pigs, llamas, goats, peacocks, turtles, and some weird looking animal running wild.

And, on a whole other side note, the Snake Farm was featured on Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe (on Discovery Channel I think) not too long ago. They have a huge alligator pit that was the main part of the show. They feed the gators on the weekends and that is a whole other 'show' in itself. Those dudes could really put a hurt on someone if they wanted to!! :o

Good times. :)
edited to add a clicky for the Snake Farm website

That is an Albino Burmese Python which grows much larger than a Ball.

Thanks!

I don't know anything about snakes, only that the one I got to hold was a ball python.

Why are they so docile? I heard that they don't become tame, then why can we hold them and stroke them?

Snakes identify anything they contact as food, threat, or environment. If you are not percieved as a threat or something to eat, they are fairly indifferent to you. This is how they appear "tame".

Ah, and they like warm environments, like my arm.

I can understand that a snake would not see you as food, but I don't see how we couldn't be seen as a threat to them. After watching the snake this weekend being passed around and wrapped over people's shoulders, I just didn't see how he didn't see one person as a threat. He didn't strike at anyone at all, and like I said, he was just chillin'. I've seen other snakes in terraniums that try to strike someone on the other side of the glass, but he was running loose. I'm not trying to debate, but it was strange that he was as docile as he was around that many people. Maybe he's just used to it?? :|

You are correct, they can become desensitized to contact with people, also the bigger the snake, the less threatening the people appear to them. Also, they do have individual behavior characteristics, some will be less prone to aggressive behavior than others. This snake would have been chosen carefully for contact with the public. Still, I wouldn't recommend handling him after you had been petting bunny rabbits ;)

Ah, good, then I don't smell anything like food.

:)
After having petted the nice snake, I can't understand people who are afraid of these snakes. I mean, some snakes are dangerous, but this snake was posetively cuddly. I wouldn't want to have one at home, though. Too big, too much work. I like fish better.

One of the most ironic things about this whole thing... Three of us in my office just played 'snake wrangler.' Somehow a grass snake made his way up to the third floor and decided to make his home in a co-workers office. He was so cute. ;) We finally were able to catch him and let him go. If he was rattling, I would have stayed far the fuck away, but he wasn't poisonous or striking, so I figured he was just scared. Poor baby. [:/]

Yep, Albino Burm. Ball pythons get to about 6 feet at the largest, Burmese can get to 28 feet or so.
Some snakes are by nature docile, but all of them can and will bite under the right circumstances. Lots of folks claim Ball pythons will not bite, I can tell from experience that they will.

As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

But I wouldn't want to handle the mambas. The owner of the zoo was bitten by one of his green mambas the day before he opened the zoo, and said that it made him forget who he was and want to hide away from from light and sound. Basically want to go into a corner and die. That's how he described it. Luckily his GF got him to the hospital, and there's an antidote. He still has the snake.
