I'm surprised swampers work at all in AZ with the increased humidity y'all are apt to have over that way. Try switching to refrigerated air.
LisaH 0 #9 July 19, 2007 Replace the water and clean the pan with bleach several times. As well as spray the pad with bleach. It has to be mold or algae you are smelling. Swamp coolers bring in outside air.Be yourself! MooOOooOoo

I read somewhere that they make cakes that you can put in there to control mold growth. Also this: http://www.thinkzincanode.com/bustims.cfm If all it is is a chunk of zinc, you could probably get a sacrificial anode from a boat shop for less than $25. ryoder 1,590 #14 July 19, 2007 I used to have problems with strange things growing in my humidifier. I finally bought a bottle of chlorine granules and put what seemed like a reasonable amount into it. The whole house reeked like the pool at a health club, except a hell of a lot stronger. I finally figured out that all I needed to do was sprinkle just a few granules into each bucket of water added. No more jelly-like blobs growing in it. squirrel 0 #15 July 19, 2007 sounds like a case of "fungus-among-gus". when you clean the pads, make sure you clean the bottom of the unit too. and, if the pads are old, repace them. further, if you run it alot, and the humidity is right, you might have something growing in the duct work. good luck. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him? It's a window unit. I just took it to the local car wash and spent 10 dollars in quarters to clean it out! New Pads!!!! It will just turn into another science experiment.. Did the bleach thing also.. Pads last about two months. Short of AC, How do I cure this Headache? Or Should I just get rid of this thing? Fishing should be great though!!! Thanks Everyone! Brains 2 #18 July 19, 2007 I carry some pan tablets that don't smell like chlorine, they have either a minty spell or no smell at all. They are also polymer encased so they won't erode metal pans and disolve into the water leaving only the casing to throw out. Don't know how long they would last in a swamp cooler they are designed to go in a central system evaporator coil. Pm me about them if you are interested in them. Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.
