TV/Movie recommendations please

Recommended Posts

Hey... due to law school and lack of money, I haven't had satellite or cable TV in about three years. I do have Netflix, though, because it's cheaper.

Unfortunately, because I haven't really been exposed to what's on TV, and I need to update my netflix queue and I have no idea what to put on it.

So, what are your favorite TV shows and/or movies? What's on your all-time-must-see list?

I know a lot of you get to watch way more movies and television than I do, so help me out here.

Thanks!

For you, you might like Desperate Housewives on Sunday nights, it's a comedy/drama series.

CSI Las Vegas and New York are good crime solving shows.

NCIS is good too (Navy Crime Investigation) I think...

The Unit (top secret military team) and Boston Legal (law firm drama with William Shatner and a few well-known actors/actresses).

Just a few off the top of my head.

I just went through ALL of the HBO series Oz, almost through Deadwood now. CSI is always good!

I've started adding some movies lately as my queue get whittled away to almost nothing in there...
Taxi Driver I just added, which now puts me in the same situation as you...what next?

I've been watching the complete Avengers series. Great, light hearted stuff.

I just got done watching the Nowhere Man series with Bruce Greenwood. Sometimes, it's out there, but it will keep you riveted.

What I like about series is that you get 3hr. of running time per disc.

I've don't own a tv period....but i do watch dvds on my laptop ,fave most recent film i,ve watched is ....Pans Labyrinth..[Guillermo Del Toro].

I saw Pan's Labyrinth in the theater. It was soooo good. I actually started to get a migraine in the middle of the movie and didn't have my headache medicine with me, and normally, I'd just leave and go back and see the rest of the movie later. Pan's Labyrinth was so good that I didn't want to leave, and I actually curled up across two or three of the stadium seats, laying down, and watched the rest of the movie with a migraine. Ended up in the ER later because I didn't get to the migraine medicine in time, but it was worth it.

Television shows (major network):

1) Scrubs
2) The Office (Hey, I actually like the American version better than the English version. So shoot me)
3) House

Standard Cable
1) Deadliest Catch
2) Modern Marvels
3) America's Game (NFL Network - some of the best television documentaries I have ever seen. This series is a real gem).
4) Intervention - I am always fascinated by that show because I either feel some sympathy for the addict or I absolutely HATE the addict. There is little middle ground.

There are plenty of other shows I watch, but these

netflix can be a good deal IF you watch and return the movies quickly... My post man takes them right from our mailbox, and leaves the new ones..B|
lots of categories and older movies. which is good if you remember titles...cause you can simply search for them on the site...
Crash... It helps if you can see it more than once.
Midnight Run... with Robt. DeNiro and Charles Grodin is a great movie especially the first time one sees it.
The Worlds Fastest Indian, is superb for many reasons. Anthony Hopkins stars.
The Straight Story with Richard Farnsworth... sort of an "amble along " kind of pace... but good viewing...
I liked Oh Brother Where are Thou?, and Fargo... Seeing familiar actors or actresses in offbeat roles, amuses me.
The classics... Moby Dick... excellent dialogue, interesting cast...Early Vintage TECHNICOLOR hollywood Film...good story.
Mutiny on the Bounty, Swiss Family Robinson...Most of the Disney films are good entertainment, animated or non animated...
Other favorites would be Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Indy Jones Saga(s), The Sting, Atlantic City with the always magnanimous Burt Lancaster !!!......ANYthing by Mel Brooks.
for TV shows, the early SNL shows were very funny and creative, Check out the " Best Of" series...

Cable TV and satellite service, are becoming more and more costly....and going OUT to a movie isn't like the olden days.... where a 10 spot would get tickets for 2 and popcorn and drinks, and enough left to put a few gallons of gas in the car...:o Not anymore.

time spent peacefully at home and watching the movies of our choice, when we want to see them, if far more relaxing than chasing around to this theater or that theater. Your instincts about conserving $$$ and dedicating yourself to your law career, are admirable, AND smart. well done.
Now......

"please take your seats, ladies and gentleman, as the show is about to begin "

I probably go through about 3 netflix per week, so it's a good deal. It'd cost me $36-$48 per month to rent that many movies at blockbuster, and I pay $17 for netflix.

i have netflix too, love it....but i thought i heard that blockbuster had a "netflix" style deal...like a flat fee per month type thing? could be wrong though

I LOVE that they have movies that haven't come out in theaters yet that you can "save". I read about independent films or see a trailer and make a note to save that movie to my queue as we never go to the theater.

I have probably 20 movies saved that are either still in theaters or haven't been released on DVD yet.

I really want to see Hounddog with Dakota Fanning--no release date yet.
