Recommended Posts

Hey,

I think i read something on this before but not sure, do you ever find yourself moving away from whuffo's cos they just dont understand jumping regardless of how hard one tries to explain it?>:(

Ive given up now and just go "good weekend" lol,
or have you lost all whuffo mates and keep in touch with just skydiving friends>

No. My whuffo friends were friends before I got into the sport and are still my friends. I make a conscious decision to keep in contact with them and spend time with them. I, also, ensure that I have the ability to talk about more than just skydiving. ;)

I dont. I no longer talk obssessively about jumping so they no longer run when they see me:P

I cant sit at the dropzone and talk about the things I see and do at work and expect them to have any real interest or understanding. I did recently have a partner for a couple months that went through aff years ago (up to level 5) at the dz I learned at. That was pretty cool and we had a connection from the get go.

Real friends can't be lost just because you jump. False friends could, I s'pose... But there's way more to life than jumping anyway. It's some thing that I do , it's not who I am.

I've been jumping since I was 18. ALL of the friends I routinely stay in contact with I met after I started jumping. None of them jump themselves (save for a tandem here and there).

I still went jumping every weekend. Sometimes went out with people at the dropzone, sometimes left after jumping to go out with my whuffo friends. They'd ask "So where are you coming from?" ... "Oh I've been jumping." and let it be. I never felt a need to preach to them, to try to get them to do it, to say how awesome it was ... UNLESS they asked, and even then, I made it a point to not talk excessively about it, and do it in large groups when nobody has anything to say except "that sounds cool".

This allows us to conversations where everybody can chime in, is genuinely interested, and in turn, let's us stay friends.

So, NO, I have not lost any friends due to skydiving, even when I'd disappear for weeks at a time to go jumping.

are you sure The111 didn't just misplace them... :D

and as for me... no... I don't just hang out with skydiving friends... in fact I really only hang out with skydiving friends when I'm at the dropzone... I hang out with my other friends everywhere else.

Interesting..........

I find that I keep in touch with all my friends from all walks of life. Life is so much bigger than skydiving.
Another interesting thing I have found to be true is that the term "whuffo" is all relative.........
Skydivers are some of the worst whuffos in the world. Just try explaining BASE to most skydivers and you'll see what I mean.

very fair point, although it is hard to alwasy get along with whuffos i have kept most of then as rly gd friends and reguarly see 10-12 good cloe mates who aren't jumpers.

I guess it is easy to become too wrapped up in certaint hings and neglect other vitally other important ones.

Good poinit mate

Not at all. The two groups of people I usually do NOT hang out with are Skydivers and Cops.
