Anybody At Lodi?

Recommended Posts

Hey!

I'm looking at buying a main canopy (Tri 190) from a guy named Dylan Myers. Just wondering if any of you know him at all? I just wanna know that he's a reputable guy before I conduct business with him....well, main part is the AD said he was in Nevada, and he wants me to send $$$ to Maryland, but he says he jumps out of Lodi, CA...so, I have a hunch it might be a scam, however he did send pictures in the e-mail, details about the canopy, and license info...not sure if I should go with it, any suggestions?

AD Link is this: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=37147&d=1

Thanks!

Since the seller is soliciting his/her merchandise they should also be willing to allow an inspection of the merchandise before the payment is processed. If either of the two parties are unwilling to divulge their full contact information right from the beginning then forget the deal. Personally, I find it offensive when someone wants me to send them expensive gear, and they are using a "handle" rather than a birth name. Good luck to you.

Try to identify a rigger local to you to act as a trusted third party. Ask the seller to send the gear to the third party for inspection. If the seller is not willing to do that, walk away. You shouldn't be buying anything used without getting it checked out first.

If they're concerned about sending the gear without payment, there are online escrow services (escrow.com is one, though I really know nothing about it other than it exists) or ask the third party to act as an informal "escrow" agent and to hold your payment and the gear until the purchase is completed.

Yea, he did agree to having a local rigger inspect it. And I've been looking at escrow, that looks pretty good.

I think that may be the best option.

If he's giving you full name and where he jumps, it doesn't sound all that fishy. Obviously, you want to be smart about your transaction, but it's the ones who ask you to send the money to Nigeria on behalf of their "client" that you have to worry about. :D:D:D

Haha, yea, no Nigeria here.

I guess I just wanna make sure that I don't get ripped off when buying used gear for the first time, since it's a pretty decent invesment. Thanks!

Yup, he didn't want to use a third-party service, so I'm guessing it probably wasn't the best deal. Oh well, I'll keep on looking!

Do you know him? I'm still interested in his deal, I was a little uneasy when he didn't want to go though the escrow.com service. I just wanna protect myself from stepping into a bad situation...

I'm sure he's a good guy!

Yes, I know him. I actually spoke on the phone with him today on an unrelated matter. Generally, unless it's a name no one has heard of, then you should worry.

And what's all this Escrow stuff? It's just a canopy - you're not buying a house . . .

BTW, if you'd like me to be your "go-between" I'll do it for free in this case.

However, now you're going to have ask other people about me!!!

Hey, I'm just wary of online purchases. Lol. Yes, I know it's probably not a big deal, but I'm a cautious buyer...nothing wrong with that! I like to cover all the angles. And this (for me anyways) is a hefty investment...so true, it may not be a house, but yea, same principle.

I'd rather be safe than sorry!:)

With a sign off from a guy like Nick, I'd feel fine with a direct xfer. Even before reading his, I was going to say the geography sounds reasonable - Lodi is where I first jumped the tri/wings combo I've since used for 100 jumps. And people drive to there from all over, attracted by its $15 jump tickets and a fairly unique DZ culture of personal responsibility.

You unfortunately missed it but Aerodyne cleared out its inventory of triathlons in February for $700. I was able to offer my 1998 220 with 320 jumps at $500 and got hit with a half dozen takers. Is this 190 a recent year model?

I traded my semblance of a known reputation here and with bay area dropzones, along with a copy of Action Air's recent inspection report to do a simple paypal up front, shipped to him the next day.

You are perfectly right to ask around about someone you don't know, who you may be sending money to with no guarantee you will receive what has been advertised.

You might want to give it more than a couple of hours before you run like a scared little rabbit, though. :D

An additional option to posting on this site (and possibly a bit more polite), is to contact the DZ. No DZ will vouch for a thief and they are usually more than happy to help.

A third party (rigger) is also an excellent option. That throws it back in their court & then they are given the option of checking you out. :)
I'm pretty paranoid myself with online transactions, but I recently sold my canopy to a really nice guy in Texas with absolutely no problems. I did check him out through the DZ, but he understood and didn't have a problem with that. B| He also knew where to find me... :)

The seller should be checking to make sure the canopy they are selling is acceptable for you anyway.

Wow, and he still sent you money? J/K!

as a seller, it was great to do it that way. I don't fault any buyer that wants to do a go between, but certainly I was going to pick the simplest transaction.

The great part was being able to upgrade to a new canopy for effectively $250.
