Mine's set for break off, deployment, and then my hard deck...and it's usually going off as I'm already doin' 2 out of the three.

At Kitty Hawk mine was set at 7,000, break off, 5,000, deployment and 1.500, my hard deck. :P

Yeah yeah...and you probably had goggles too huh?!

Some of you guys must have well calibrated eyeballs.

Take a number of rides to altitude paying attention to what the ground and the landmarks around your DZ look like at important points in freefall.

Take a number of landings and pay attention to what the landmarks / houses / trees look like at significant points in your pattern. You should be able to transfer those general ideas anywhere.

Your first mission, should you chose to accept it:

At what altitude do doors and windows come info focus on the houses below you in freefall? What should you be doing when that happens?

Never rely on anything that grows trees, bushes and such. By the time you figure out if it is a bush or a tree it is too late. Use houses and cars, they are always about the same size. As for the windows, if you can count the panes in a house window you are fucked. :P

You guys that mentioned "internal clock".
Think about that...

You're used to turbine 14K exits.
Now you go do a Cessna 10.5 exit.

(Yes, the worst has happened and given the reliance on the internal clock, it will happen again.)

You may want to re-think your internal clock idea.

Eyeballs, people...eyeballs.

Just for the record, I usually carry 3 altimeters....two of which are eyeballs.
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

You've taken my words out of context. I referenced trees as something to look at during a pattern, not in freefall.

I also didn't suggest counting panes in windows.

This is not out of context. If you are at an altitude where you can focus on the window in a house you are fucked. I mentioned trees because people will tend to take your statements out of context and think trees are a good reference anytime during a skydive. It wasn’t meant as a flame so chill.

I don't have the best eyesight, sparky... and windows come into focus for me at about 3K. I don't feel the least bit fucked at that altitude. A crusty old AFFI taught me that my first year jumping.

This is a picture from about 2000 ft. Are the windows in focus yet?

That's a still from a camera not an eyeball. I can take a blurry picture of the wall across the room and it doesn't mean anything.

And edit for focus... You have some arrows indicating 3200 / 5200 feet with no reference to relative sight. And there are windows and doors coming into focus but just on the edge. Where does anything here show 2000 feet? Looks 1000-1500 feet higher to me.

The arrows are pointing out the GPS readings as to what ground elevation is and what altitude you eye is. If you do the math it comes out to around 2000 feet. Since you think it looks like 1500 to 1000 feet can I be on your ash dive?

Not reliably.

The Barn at Skydance may be the most striking example. It used to be the student LZ, about half a mile north of the main LZ and the DZ. It's as it sounds, a barn with a field on each side. If you look down and think of this as a large building, you're going to be way off, because this barn could store some large jetliners. Fortunately this error would work in your favor in other places, if you err'd it would be on the high side. But if instead you went elsewhere and waited for the new barn to look just as close, you might be counting those windows...

I couldn't SEE any windows, too much damn smoke in my eyes! ;)

I would say it is too late for the rosary beads. But fear not there is always a well preformed PLF.

Where can I get a pre-formed PLF? Do they come in different sizes and colors?

I jumped at a small DZ once, not my usual place, and the CCI gave me a very serious warning about eyeballing the altitude at that DZ. The fields in the surrounding area are much smaller than most other places and apparently visitors who eyeball the altitude often find themselves a lot lower than they'd like because of it.

Don't rely on Eyeballs alone either. That can get you into trouble...

Wrist mount, chest mount, audible, eyeballs.

With all that crap you will not have money to jump so problem solved.
