JENNR8R 0 #1 June 30, 2007 Are they necessary for a home computer? I came home tonight to the plaintive screams of my Back-UPS. I immediately called my computer geeky son, and we determined that if I plugged my computer into the wall instead of the battery, everything would be fine. Apparently, the Back-UPS is ill. He said he has never owned one. For some reason I thought the computer police would come to arrest me if I didn't have one. Do you use one on your home computer? What do you call a beautiful, sunny day that comes after two cloudy, rainy ones? -- Monday.
waltappel 1 #2 June 30, 2007 I don't use one yet, but I will get one eventually. They are most important for computers and other electrical equipment that needs to be continuously available, and other automated equipment that could suffer data loss if not shut down gracefully. For a home computer the advantage of using one is that if you are creating your masterpiece on your computer and have a sudden power outage, you will not lose your work. Guest #4 June 30, 2007 A UPS is a great thing to have. However, when the battery dies, the UPS will scream bloody murder until it's replaced. For consumer UPSs, a 6-Volt, 5000mAH gel-cell is pretty standard. You should not pay more than $15 for a replacement. Don't go to Radio Shack if you can help it. Get the voltage and mAH rating from the battery and go shopping at an industrial electronics supplier if you can find one - you'll get a better deal. mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." aetas 0 #5 June 30, 2007 I may or may not be a computer geek but I don't use a battery. I would say just save your work often. Also having a laptop is cool because if the power goes out you'll just run off battery.26tt
AndyMan 7 #6 June 30, 2007 In 7 years of living in my neighborhood, I've never lost power. I do not have a home UPS. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
freefallfreak 0 #7 June 30, 2007 I use a battery backup and it saved me a bunch of money - only once - but was worth the price I paid for the UPS. Lightening struck my system and fried the system, including the backup...it seems that the thing had a gaurantee/warranty that replaced the whole computer with the exception of the monitor - and Belkap sent me a check to replace everything. All I had to do was send them a copy of the reciepts for the puter and the battery backup plus the battery backup itself. A few weeks later I recieved a check that covered the entire cost of my puter, including a new UPS. TripleF "Upon seeing the shadow of a pigeon, one must resist the urge to look up." PWScottIV 0 #8 July 3, 2007 I use a UPS and it's actually saved my ass on two occasions. I also happen to use my computer extensively for school and work, so it might be a bit more important for me than the average home user. However, if you have occasional black/brown-outs, then you might consider using one to keep your frustration levels to a minimum. Most also act as surge protectors... But you could get the same protection from a high-quality power-strip with a built-in surge protector.Gravity Waits for No One.

I used to only use a surge protector, falsely believing that it was all that was needed for my computer. Sadly I was mistaken with a power transformer blew outside my house. I was lucky that only the power supply was fried (read $300 to replace). I now have a capable Battery Back-up and it has more than once saved my computer from its otherwise fate. Best investment. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

SuperKat 0 #11 July 3, 2007 I am a geek. I have never used one nor have I ever had the need for one and I run 3 desktops and one laptop at home. I've worked with a lot of Back UPS at my old job it came in very handy for them on occassions because we were in a 20 story building which used a lot of juice. tkhayes 348 #16 July 3, 2007 Almost always, the battery goes bad after a while. You can get many of them at Tractor SUpply, or your local electrical shop. I buy them on Ebay, almost always cheaper. Just search on the number you find on the side of the battery. A new battery and it will be a good as new - don't forget to recycle the old one, it is a sealed lead acid battery and should not be tossed in the trash. Wal-Mart auto shop will take them for disposal.

JENNR8R 0 #18 July 4, 2007 Well thanks to you and markharju, I now know that the battery inside is replaceable. That was news to me! I thought I would have to replace the whole thing if I really needed one! Apparently, not all computer geeks are created equal. Some swear by them and some, like my son, don't see the necessity. Thanks for the tip on where to recycle too. What do you call a beautiful, sunny day that comes after two cloudy, rainy ones? -- Monday.
