Flyinace2000 0 #1 August 3, 2006 I did a search and read a bunch of the articles. I did my first tandem jump last weekend and I want MORE. So i am looking into buying my first rig. Can you please recomend some equipment and sizes. I am 5'10" and 190 lbs. I will definetly want to buy used because....its cheaper. I don't want to spend more that $1900/$2000. I have read about AAD and that seems like an outstanding idea. So what can yo uall recomend? THANKS
bob.dino 1 #2 August 3, 2006 Complete your student training before you buy gear. Then you'll have an idea of what kind of gear you need.
Flyinace2000 0 #3 August 3, 2006 Is my priuce range realistic for a complete setup?
jeremy556 0 #4 August 3, 2006 You will spend about that much getting your A license, then worry about buying gear, and 2K would probably be doable. Go and do a first jump course and AFF/static line/whatever before you look at gear to see if this sport is for you.
GravityGirl 0 #5 August 3, 2006 2K is a low number for good modern sport gear. It is possible to find something in that price range. But it is the very low end of the price you can expect to pay for used equipment. A realistic figure these days is more like $3k - $4k. And they are right. You need to get the training first before you start gear shopping. But it's always good to start your research. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear! Guest #6 August 3, 2006 Hey- Yea, as I just purchased the components for my rig, it'll be tough to get it for 2K, unless you want some older gear. I ended up spending about 3.5K (which I looked around for some good deals for a while) but that also entailed a new container and new reserve.... I started doing research at about your time (before I even did AFF, lol). But yea, go through the first jump course--AFF, Static Line, or whatever--then consider buying gear. Your instructors will be able to help you choose canopies and all that jazz once they see your abilities. Good luck and cheers!
Auram 0 #7 August 3, 2006 I just got all of my components together for my first rig. All in all....probably about 2200 for everything I needed. I got a great deal on a main canopy, reserve and container though.
divegoddess 0 #8 August 3, 2006 mine was about two grand. The container is fairly old though.
Chris-Ottawa 0 #9 August 3, 2006 4230 for mine all said and done. Gear was bought new in 2003, 55 jumps on everything. Cypres needed 4 yr Cost me $460 in taxes to bring it into Canada Cost $400 to get the Cypres 4 Yr done, and $70 for my rigger to pack the cypres and reserve. **Note: All prices in Canadian, so that's like $75 US for everything (hehe) But the best part...I HAVE MY OWN GEAR AND DON'T HAVE TO BORROW GEAR THAT I END UP CUTTING AWAY AND FEELING TERRIBLE! (not like that happened or anything). Seriously though, hold up on buying gear till at least you have your solo and have a better idea of what you want. EDIT to add my total investment. To get all my gear and the jumps I have and everything, 've spent about 7 grand Canadian. Never thought I'd get bitten this hard. Chris"When once you have tasted flight..." Oke 0 #10 December 3, 2006 I'm sure it has been posted before, but I can't seem to find an existing thread on it. Firstly I'm a new skydiver and I will be continuing with my AFF come spring. After completition I will be looking for a complete rig. What size canopy would be good for a newbie around 5' 11, 190lbs (with some room to grow). If anyone could explain to me, link me to a web site, or link me to another thread on canopy selection, that would be great. Thanks,-Adam Oke

DougH 270 #13 December 3, 2006 With modern gear and an AAD I would expect to spend more in the range of 3000+. Of course you could get a killer deal, or find a rig with an AAD just about to go out of date in a year or two."The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

It's not REAL old, the container and main are from '98 and the reserve is a few years newer. BUT, it's in awesome shape, came with a Cypres that had a year and a half of life left, and it's already saved me a bunch of money because I'm not renting any more. Consult with your instructors and rigger as far as what you should look for. They know your abilities and know what to put you on to keep you safe. You're thinking right, though. Definitely go used for your first rig. Most likely you won't do all that many jumps on it before wanting to downsize, or wanting custom, etc. Good luck!
