An Offer I Can't Refuse?

Just got an email from TiVo, saying that for a "limited time" they are letting people with lifetime service transfer their service over to a new TiVo box if they buy an 80 hour box for $299.

See, I signed up for TiVo back in the day when you could buy a lifetime subscription and it would pay for itself in less than 2 years. Since I've now had it for 4 1/2 years ... I'm feeling pretty good about my decision. Now it's all monthly fees and a business model based on service revenue not on hardware revenue.

I have a 40 hour box. I'm not really worried about capacity ... if anything it keeps me from saving too much crap that I don't need to watch anyway. It may very well survive for years to come ... or it might crap out on me tomorrow, in which case, having transferred the service to a new box be a good decision.

So, do I leave the gun or take the cannoli?

I just received the same email. I've had lifetime membership since about 2001. I think this might be a great deal. My first Tivo crapped out after about 4 yrs and i had to get a new one. I think upgrading would be a nice idea. I'm going to consider it.... hope this helps.

Nope. I know how to program the thing. I still use it to record my shows so the time must be set correctly.

Adding more storage to a TiVo is really easy. It took me about 30 minutes to move my 40 hour to a 160 hour box. Thats on Low, if you record in Best its only about 28 hours.

The hard drive is about the only thing that can "wear out" on your TiVo. I'd get a geek frind of yours to upgrade your drive to something larger and then put the current drive in storage and pull it out if the new drive ever crashes in the future. Total cost for an upgrade is about $75.

Only reason to upgrade is to get a Series 3 with the HD ability if you have HD TV.

ANYway, my thoughts are is there ANYTHING really worth watching if you're not at home to watch it "live".

I know NOTHING about TiVo. BUT if you look at it as replacing one you have that could crap out tomorrow, why not do it. If you don't and your current one craps out, what will it cost you? The same? More?

My theory on a DVR is that it makes me watch good stuff. I never have to plan my life around television - I just tell it what to record and it records it. Then when I am at home and in the mood to watch TV, I don't just watch whatever's on - I watch the good stuff that I have recorded. And yes, there are a few good shows on TV these days.

If I replace the box later, it'll cost less for the box, BUT then I get into subscription fees every month.
