CMiller 1 #31 November 2, 2009 Never. Can't you use your reserve for floatation for a few minutes?
GLIDEANGLE 1 #32 November 3, 2009 QuoteNever. Can't you use your reserve for floatation for a few minutes? What if I have had a reserve ride? Actually in some circumstances a reserve ride might INCREASE my risk of a water landing. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others! grimmie 186 #35 November 10, 2009 Your reserve will keep you afloat for a while. Times may vary depending upon the rig/pack job etc. Don't rely on it to save your life. The key to a water landing is not to panick. The worst thing that happens is getting the lines entangled in with your legs. Land into the wind. Chop your main if it's dragging you. Get out of your rig if your reserve is dragging you. Don't cut away until "splash down". Stay calm. Think your way out of any issues. My favorite water jump each year, 60 miles out from land. http://www.skydivebelize.com/Ferringto-Blue-Hole_cropped.jpg
billvon 3,070 #36 November 11, 2009 Well - At Otay, about .5 to 1 mile from a lake, usually not. Over San Francisco, with 46kt upper winds pushing us over the bay, definitely. In between, it depends.
Euroman 0 #37 November 19, 2009 For floation device, why not just wear a 1/2 wetsuit? that would be enough to keep you afloat. What's the drawback, other than on some days it might get a little warm.
