livendive 8 #26 June 11, 2007 I always sling my rig over my back and carry my camera bag with one suit in it. My gear back stuffed with other jumpsuits, clothes, etc gets checked. MikeJD 0 #27 June 11, 2007 If you want to take your rig as carry-on, I see no reason to openly wear it. Soft bags are pretty affordable - if you don't have a purpose-built rig bag, then almost any kind of backpack will do. They also ensure that you're not going to snag your handles on anything, or attract unnecessary attention.
brianfry713 0 #28 June 11, 2007 You can, but why would you want to? I would rather have it in a bag to protect it, or if I had to I'd just wear it on my shoulders without the leg straps on and then stow it in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of me. If you actually wanted to wear it while sitting down in a seat, it might not be the most comfortable flight. If you just want to wear it for shock value, I would think that most people either wouldn't know what it was, wouldn't care, wouldn't say anything, or would realize that you're not going to be able to safely bail out of a normal large jet airline. If someone was smart enough to know what it was and dumb enough to think that you were a threat, personally I don't think it would be a lot of fun to cause a scene and hassle the TSA and airline/airport employees. Actually... sometimes it fun to try to educate them. My stepson used to work for the TSA... and he would come home with the stupidest new regulations for the day.... And never once thought to question the logic behind why this or that is suddenly bad. A regular vogon. I like trying to pry open his tightly sealed eyes... ROK 0 #30 June 12, 2007 QuoteI have carried mine on flights dozens of times, most recently was January. I almost always just wear it like a backpack. Never had an issue. Have been detained for a few minutes when they want to use the rig to train other screeners though. I've also slung mine over my shoulder many times while traveling. I tried the bag thing and it's much easier to let your shoulder support the weight. I've never had any problems at all. I did have a supervisor walk over to me after getting through security at Tampa and tell me I came through the wrong line and point me back to a line that was about 14 miles long. My jaw hit the floor and he laughed and said (gotcha)! People do not know what it is, and that's just fine with me. As far as putting the leg straps on....Why in the hell would someone do that? tkhayes 348 #31 June 12, 2007 you said it best - he just wearing it to 'piss people off'. I have no time for people who go out of their way to do that sort of thing. It is THEIR airline and THEIR airplane, and they can set the rules if they like. Skydivers need to stop being dicks about the issue of carrying their rig on board. If you are so concerned about the airlines losing it, then drive. Or better yet, ship your rig insured Fedex ahead of time. You are nto allowed to carry a can of gasoline on board, or a bottle of liquor, or your gun, your go-cart and thousands of other things. If they say that you cannot bring your rig and you do not like it, then start your own airline and set your own rules. TK
