I've only paid off a tiny % of the value of my house, but it has gone up in value since I bought it. If I sold it today I could probably get around $60,000 more than I paid for it. do I count that as part of my wealth? You would include only the equity in your house, and your 401k is counted since it's actually part of your net worth. Include any other property, paid off vehicles. Only stuff of value. Then the kicker is take that amount, then subtract all your debt from that amount and you've got your net worth. This is some NYT Flash applet too. So it's only based upon the script writers specifics. It's not a true gauge of ones socioeconomic status in society. Or is it? Am I really that bad off?
