ROAD TRIP!! Driving from Austin to Phoenix

Recommended Posts

I am seriously thinking about going on a road trip for the Memorial Day weekend... I've made the 15-hour drive before, and after a phone call from my aunt, I'm thinking about doing it again... What I am curious about is the gas prices along I-10 from Austin to Phoenix. Does anyone along the way know what I should expect to be paying? The prices here are still under $3.00/gal., but the prices in Cali and Nevada were quite higher... :S

And, if you're along the way and would love to offer me a place to sleep on my way there, let me know. ;) I get tired after 8-10 hours of driving... I have a few places in Phoenix to lay my head, so when I'm there, I got that part covered.

Suggestions? :)

Don't road trip with me... I tend to drive non-stop until I get to my destination with the exception for stops for gas and potty breaks>:(
Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.

That's usually how I am on the way home... This trip might be different though... The last time I drove it, I was moving there, and I was tired from packing up the car. This time I'm just going for a visit. I have friends and family there, and strangely they all called to "check in with me" the day before I left for Cali... :S

Make sure your A/C is charged up. :P

It's a brand new car... The license plates just came in, and those will be put on tomorrow. I plan on breaking it in with a 2000+ mile drive roundtrip... :o The A/C better be charged, or I'll be blessing some Honda dealership with my presence on the way there...

did they think we weren't going to let you leave or were they worried we'd kick you out?:P

They just wanted to know why I was going to Cali and not Arizona. I was just there in November, but I guess they are having SWS (Shari Withdrawal Syndrome). For some reason, it seems to happen quite a bit for some people. They can't seem to get enough of me. :o:$ Yea, I'm so B|...

A lot. There are some very remote stretches of road along there, interrupted by only a few small towns, and the prices are always much higher than in the big cities.

If you don't have the cash, put it on a credit card and pay it off later.

There is one stretch between Ft. Stockton and Van Horn where you'll go at least a half-tank of gas, 150 miles or so, between gas stations. So when in doubt, stop every half-tank and top-off.

Watch out for the tumbleweed.

There is so much of absolutely nothing in west Texas. Gas prices tend to be about 20 cents more/gallon too.

The last trip to Phoenix I drove I remember stopping three or four times for gas and once for "dinner." I was driving an older vehicle on its last wheel, so I am hoping to get better gas mileage with the new Honda. If I go, I will be leaving tomorrow morning and will get there EARLY Saturday morning (2 or 3) if I don't stop in New Mexico or Tucson. My aunt and uncle probably would not be up at that time, so it would be better for me to stay somewhere else, and meet up with them Saturday afternoon. I really have no commitments right now, so time is not really a concern for me. :|

OK... I'm leaving in the morning... If you're in the Phoenix area and are just dying to meet me, shoot me your number via PM, and I'll make sure to schedule some time... I should be there tomorrow night, and will be leaving Wednesday morning. :)

Is she coming back here? Tell her to come back to SoCal...I still haven't met her. :)

No, not this trip. She's going to see her Aunt and Uncle in Phoenix. She'll back her in a couple of months. :)

Hey Gonzo... I'd like to thank you for the nice ride you gave me last night! ;) I just loved it when you started going faster and faster... It was all over before I knew it. You left me craving more and more... But, it sure did leave a smile on my face. :o:$

It was only up to 101 yesterday. I refuse to come visit June - early September. I'll take the Texas heat with humidity over Phoenix any day. :S
