ACMESkydiver 0 #1 May 30, 2007 'K I am NOT a 'smoker', but upon occassion, twice per month, I will have a cigarette. (I know, bad bad...blah blah, but hell it isn't a pack a day or anything! ) -but seriously, is it WORSE for your lungs to go running after you've smoked, or is it worse to smoke right after you ran? I've heard both... I ask because I just had one of my two monthly cigarettes, and I realized that I have a block of time and I should use it to run, since I am in my workout clothes, and didn't run this morning like I fully intended on doing... If I wait, I am afraid that this window of time of complete peace and quiet that I am not required to be any where for any body will evaporate and I'll not get to it at ALL, which is by far worse... So, should I run right now, or am I REALLY asking for trouble since I am just starting back into exercise again? Will I destroy my lil' lungs or what? ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.

BelskyBlueEyes 0 #6 May 30, 2007 Smoking is bad for you no matter when you do it. And, it can cause more then just laryngitis. How about cancer? If you choose to smoke, so be it. But I cant see any logical reasoning behind is it better to smoke now or later. The damage gets done regardless.
nerd137 0 #7 May 31, 2007 I'm like you...but I only smoke maybe an average of one cigarette every six weeks. Anyhoo, as far as long term damage: (1) I can't imagine 2 smokes a month is gonna do much harm. I think air pollution in urban environments is worse than that. (2) I sincerely doubt that the timing of your smoke in relation to when you're exercising has any impact on the severity of the harm caused by cigarette smoke. Beyond that, all I can say is that the LAST thing I'd ever want to do after smoking a cigarette is go running. Haha.
quade 4 #8 May 31, 2007 I can only guess, but my WAG would be that smoking before exercising will put you into oxygen debt faster (since you're already going to have a mild case of carbon monoxide poisoning) and that, as a result, you'll have a less effective workout.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

That's the kind of info I was looking for. I remember one person telling me that it was worse to have a smoke prior due to blood circulation issues...my husband was pretty sure that it would be worse to light up right after, as you're breathing deeply and your lungs are 'open', as he put it...it's not a medical reason, but Rangers were pretty in tune with what was going on physically when they were maxed out all the time, and so many of them smoked as well... He had a guy in his unit that would smoke a cigarette right before every run, blow everyone's doors off on the run, and then smoke the cigarette he had in his sock cuff right after. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
