Dare you do this (PG pics)

Recommended Posts

I have seen several loops together, i just didn't realize that was considered tumbling. I thought tumbling was unintentional.

This shot was taken over Graybird airsports in Dunellin FL after being towed on a scooter wench. Most of my paragliding has been around CA and NV. Places like Slide Mtn., the dumps in Pacifica, and dunes around Montery area.

I dont know myself (I'm just learning how to SAT, so loops and tumbles are a ways off) but found this...

loop ...a pilot induced acrobatic maneuver. In essence, a tight spiral dive or large consecutive asymmetric turns immediately followed by a sudden, dynamic turn in the opposite direction to send the pilot looping over the canopy. High acceleration is needed to enter the maneuver with maximum weight shift and a firm brake to initiate the loop sequence. Excessively fast, deep brake may inadvertently spin the wing or reduce the pilot's momentum enough to fall into the canopy mid loop.

2 successful with Comp Cobalt @ 1.7 (light load for this trick)... Lucky twice, not trying again. Done a 4,000ft both times (while expecting the worst).
*I doubt mine was a "true 100% vertical" Barrel roll.

Cool Advance make some great wings and DVH1-2 is ideal for alpine flying.

Have you flown much?

I'm going to be in Verbier the 1st week in july and will also be taking my freefall rig.

Is there a more profound reason for not having a slider-down packed, ram-air reserve as well as a cutawayable paraglider wing (cutaway RSL'ed to the reserve) than the lack of skydiving training in many paraglider pilots?

Partly tradition partly the alti of a lot of the flying and other emergency scenario details.

Look at discussions here about cutting away under 1k vs more fabric. Most of the dangerous scenarios are more likely to be encountered low and near obstacles.

Someone also made and marketed a cutaway system and was unable to sell enough, they did sell some to test pilots.

I think there's a mix of justifiable reasons and industry inertia. I like my PG round, I know it's unlikely to wrap my wing and deploys damned fast. I can also choose my deployment direction and there's a chance (probably slim) I could throw it out of my wing if I took a wrap. I don't think I'd change it now given a choice, but Calvin (who posts here) I know wants to do this very thing after his PG accident.

As Dobie says... time & altitude (most accidednts are low (can be tree top height!!) and you dont want a 2 (Ram-Airs) out situation.

P.S : I have a cut away on my Tandem... would probably only use it on landing, if it's gusty, small area, obsticles etc. Not likely in the air.
