DickMcMahon 0 #1 May 20, 2007 In a text book about acting, author John Regan suggests that people go on stage or act in films for the same reason they climb mountains, bungee jump, skydive, or wander off into uncharted jungle trails. They’re all similar challenges testing one’s vulnerability and pro- ducing adrenaline rushes. I think he’s right. Being another character can be fun. You get to do things you may not otherwise do … like cussing a lot! Several roles have required me to use some pretty bad cuss words ... ones I’ve normally tried to avoid in real life. It’s fun to say 'em. And, yes, there’s an adrenaline rush walking out in front of a lot of people and wondering if you’ll forget the lines and make a total fool of yourself. Besides having to cry or laugh as the part may require, there are always new challenges. In a play called Casina I was supposed to be a guy having an erection. To be honest with you I didn’t know that was what the playwright wanted until the director told me. The script just said, “Now that I'm in love with Casina, how I have BLOOMED out!
