But you think about The Fabulous Moolah's 22 year reign as Women's World Champion in the 70's and 80's, you can't help but marvel at how long that really is. philly51 0 #28 May 13, 2007 It was the Iron Sheik. Suppossedly a body guard to the Ayatollah Khomeini. DSE 5 #33 May 13, 2007 Baron von Raschke...that's an oldie. Years ago I was head of the audio department at a civic venue, and would run sound during the wrestling meets. von Raschke would sit in the stands during setup, was a hoot to listen to. He also carried a small piece of razor in his wristguard to cut his forehead so he'd bleed. It was always fun seeing his Claw come out, and he'd squeeze apples or whatever fruit was available. Hulk Hogan was just getting started in those days, he was also a very cordial guy out of the ring. FWIW, the AWA was the first promotion group (AFAIK) to come up with the idea of mic'ing the ring floor. Their stage rider was incredibly detailed for how the mat had to be mic'd and mixed. kenz 0 #34 May 13, 2007 i used to LOVE watching wrestling when i was a kid - we went as a family to summer slam '88 and it was amazing there isnt a single wrestler previously mentioned that i didn't love - there are home videos of me doing hulk hogan's little routine before and after every match and singing "i am a real american" ;) also liked bret the hitman heart, ted dibiasi, and mr perfect (rip) a good family friend of ours is mick foley aka mankind, cactus jack - i cant tell you how many scars that man has its nuts... but i just cant get into it like i did when i was younger... its just not the same - ridiculous memories - GREAT thread i LOVe it"life does throw curveballs sometimes but it doesn't mean we shouldn't still swing for the homerun" ~ me

skymama 37 #38 May 13, 2007 Quote Did any of you guys have Gordon Solly (SP?) as the announcer? OHH YEAH DUST RHODES THE AMERICAN DREAM BABY!!!! I grew up with two brothers, so I ended up watching wrestling too. Dusty Rhodes is the one I remember the most, and Gordon Solly was the announcer. I remember the day when we found a big piece of foam and we drew Dusty on it with a marker. We spent the whole afternoon beating him up. Ah, the good ol' days. Who needs Playstation when you have foam and a marker? She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

masterblaster72 0 #40 May 13, 2007 Another one I liked that I forgot to mention was Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff. He had a devastating piledriver, I remember when he damn near broke a guy's neck with it. Anyone have any favorite losers? Mine was Leaping Lanny Poffo. I used to love the way he'd deliver those corny poems and then get his ass kicked left and right, what a riot that was Iron Mike Sharpe was a fun loser to watch too. Okay, maybe this is a long shot, but does anyone remember G.L.O.W. -- Georgeous Ladies of Wrestling? usedtajump 1 #43 May 13, 2007 I worked at the Sportatorium In Dallas, TX in the 60s and during my time there got to know many truly old school wrestlers such as: Bull Curry Fritz Von Eric Killer Karl Kox Lou Thesz Ernie Ladd Duke Keomuka Irish Danny McShane Red Bastine Don Leo Jonathan Pepper Gomez Skandar Akbar Nick and Jerry Kozak Mark Lewin The Dalton Gang There are many others but I don't want to appear to be a name dropper. If you don't know who these folks are, you truly know nothing about old school wrestling. The older I get the less I care who I piss off.

mktoson 0 #50 May 14, 2007 Here's two others that were huge in the SE Region: Buzz Sawyer and Tommy Rich. I remeber Tommy Rich getting his ass kicked at the Columbus Municipal Auditorium by Buzz Sawyer. The brawl spilled into the audience and everyone went wild. So far, this is the oldest I've ever been.
