What?! They refer to it as "DORKZONE?" I'm shattered.
I'm not going to argue with you any further. You and I will just have to disagree. I didn't say anything about policing things or running things my way. I just told you what I respect the most, and I do think it's a matter of taking responsibility for your own actions and your own jumps--which can sometimes endanger other people, whether it has to do with being under the influence or anything else. But on the other hand, just because there's a spin off jumping community of "dark side jumpers" doesn't mean I have to agree with them, either.
Really, it doesn't come as a news flash to me that not all skydivers see it "my way" and that not all skydivers are as pure as the driven snow. I suspect I like a lot of them, too. It still doesn't mean I'd want to jump with them if they were under the influence or that I would condone it if they did.
As for being high, i don't smoke the ganja so i dont know but i have heard stories.

Nowadays the drug scene in the sport is hugely more discreet. As I'm not a part of it, I don't see any of it going on. In the old days you'd see it whether you liked it or not. Nowadays I won't jump under the influence of anything. Mostly for simple safety, but also because I think the high of skydiving is too perfect to ruin with anything. I won't jump with anyone who I think is using, but that hasn't come up either.
Things really have changed for the better.

The worst I ever saw was a school packer who was tweeked outta his mind on a regular basis - he was down right scary right before the DZ let him go.
I've wanted to do a cross country sunset jump with a beer, but usually chicken out and stay on the ground and drink.

OMG, is she okay?
Anything in moderation is good. Seriously popping a beer and doing x country i personally don't think there is a problem. Now if you do 12 beers and stagger to the plane then that is where i would say hey fuckwit get off the plane.

On the ground I'm as libertarian as can be - a genuine ex hippie, ex-pot smoker and ex-psychedelic space cadet (references available on request). Nowadays I don't touch anything but the booze, oh and caffeine. I think pot should be legalized, or at least as tolerated as it is in Canada and most of Europe. But I disagree with its use in the sky. I personally witnessed a fatality in 1980 where some stoned guy flailed away and finally pulled his reserve around 100 ft. he hadn't even hit line stretch when he bounced, it was just pathetic. I didn't know at the time the guy was stoned, but some friends of mine told me they'd smoked a joint with him before the load. Nowadays an AAD would probably have saved him, but I don't think AADs were invented so people could get lit before the load. Your remark about high performance landings is on the mark, as the guy who cashed in at Skydive Chicago 3 years ago (?) was also lit.
Pot today is just too damned powerful. Even back in the seventies, when everyone was doing it, we were only smoking Columbian, which was like drinking wine. Today's bud is like Everclear - one hit and your F-U-C-K-E-D up for way too many hours.
I'm no neo-Puritan. It's just not cool.

QuoteI've occasionally considered getting fairly drunk (which for me is three beers or so) and getting in a tunnel just to see how I perform differently. What's the difference in what I perceive, how fast I can move, how coordinated I am etc. Someday when I have some time (and money) to waste I may try it.
I propose a clinical test for you. 2 minutes in the tunnel completely sober. Drink a beer. 2 minutes in the tunnel. Drink another beer. 2 minutes in the tunnel, keep repeating until the tunnel supervisor/bartender says you've had enough.
And get it all on video.

Quotefuck yes. In summer there is nothing like doing a high hop and pop and enjoying a beer under canopy and enjoying a beautiful sunset.
I did a sunset freefall jump with 3 of my closest friends some 10 years ago. We brought a bottle of beer up, already uncapped. Pulled the 4 way off the C182 cleanly with one guy holding the bottle with his thumb over the opening. We took turns gulping it down along the way. Believe it or not, it was completely empty well before breakoff!

you deaf people dont know how to party properly see you should of each had your own bottle I love hn pops in summer with a beer. Now i am getting older i may switch to an XO or some high caliber drink...lol Like a grey gouse or an 18 yr old malt whiskey.. Anyone care to hnpop this week-end

Of course there's a wide spectrum of experiences in this area, some better than others. As far as pot, time perception's too screwed up. Don't think that'd be good, and in my (ahem) very limited experience, it's hard to be just a little bit stoned. Alcohol? Maybe a beer under canopy like others have alluded to, but I've never done that either....

QuoteOnly once, which is kinda amazing in itself, and it was not a good thing. Really and truly wondered if I was having a heart attack. Turns out it was just a little angina. Bad, bad, juju. My recommendation is "don't."

1 beer under canopy does not affect you. Have you ever had a beer on a dock or a boat and watched the sunset and thought man this is awesome..That is what its like under canopy. Especially with a beautiful sunset. Now, if you drink before hand it effects you but 1 beer under canopy. I personally think its no big deal. Just dont let the pilot know as it can get him in shit.

Oh the good ole days! I started skydiving in the late 70's.
I'll admit, I did a few things I'm not willing to do again. I just thank God that I'm still around to learn from it.

I can agree with this.
Sounds very tranquil & inspiring at the same time.
Jump # 150 just might be a sunset load.

I'm being enthusiastic!
I have already publically stated my views. A little wacky tabbacy is good for freefall but not so good for the canopy ride (especially if someone happens to be doing HPLs) and this is all from personal experience where I learned that while I like freefall, I like the canopy ride more and thus need to keep my wits about me while in that environment.
Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
