So I had an interesting thought regarding international airline travel.

Recommended Posts

I just realized it's cheaper for me to buy three full-fare economy class tickets from Melbourne to Los Angeles than it is to buy one business class ticket. Is there any reason I couldn't buy a block of three seats all for myself, and get 3x the frequent flyer miles in addition to having plenty of room for myself?

I mean, if they make the fatties buy two seats, why wouldn't I be allowed to buy a block of three together if I so desired? They don't lose any income, and if anything it's better for them. Less weight on the plane, less people to feed/attend to, less cleanup, etc.

It's that part I can see not happening. They'll figure out a way to screw you.

Yup. You can only travel as one of you, so the other two will get hosed on the points since they won't actually be making the trip. Now if you could figure out some way to go through the gate, sneak back into the terminal and then go through the gate again...and again...then you'd be in business!

I dunno. Just this year I took a trip where dad booked my tickets and his, and he got credit for my travel. Had to convince United to give me my damned miles and take 'em out of his account if they had to. :D

Yup, he bought them and your butt was in the seat. You (or he in this case) got the points for actually completing the travel. You could buy a dozen cross country tickets, but you only get credit (at least in most FF programs) for the travel that you complete.

Few months back I skipped out on the 4th leg of a 4 leg trip. Got the miles from the first three segments, but no dice on the 4th, even though the ticket was paid for and no refund issued.

Hmmm...do us all a favor and take someone with you that can witness the whole thing, that way they can come back and post to tell us what happened while they have you in interrogation, trying to figure out what kind of terrorist activity you were trying to get away with!

Kicker being: you cant have them all under the same airline points number. :|

Really? I've put friend's tickets under my number before and gotten the credit, even though I didn't pay for their ticket. At the gate just asked them to add my number to their profile. Points showed up as if I had purchased them for their travel. Suuuuweeeet!

Now, guess the person taking the reservations would have to be pretty dim to see three different versions of the first name, with the same last name.

Grue - you just need to get two sets of fake documents! That's it!

Does the airline say you can buy 3 seats for yourself? They should be happy to let you do it, they get the money for 3 people with only one person's weight to carry in the plane.

You could probably sell the 3 seats for a couple hours at a time for lots of money when everyone gets leg cramps and such. :D

People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

yea you could prolly get that done.

I trave a lot for business and I sometimes get my plans really late. Many times you awards miles are based on the class of ticket. There are different classes even for coach. I've dropped 900 for a last min flight and got almost 1800 mediallion miles.
Its not always about the the seats! ;)

Durka durka frequent flyer jihad!

If you are buying 3 seat how about giving me one :)

Well the point of buying three seats would be to have enough room to lay down and sleep, without having to buy a business class ticket ;)

I'm never ever listening to you bitch about the cost of an AAD eating in to your jumping money. Buy one seat and 200 jump tickets instead.

It's moot, I wouldn't actually do it. I use my FF miles to upgrade if I can't get a bulkhead or exit row seat without someone next to me. Every once in a while I have to suck it up and deal with 16 hours of hell on earth.

As for the AAD thing, I wasn't given a choice to be 6'3" with a big build. Trust me, I'd rather be a 5'7" guy built like a sprinter, but it wasn't in the cards, so I have to make due which sometimes means spending money I'd rather not spend in the name of my mental health. The AAD thing SHOULD be a choice, which is why I resent the fact that I was required to buy one and will continue to OCCASIONALLY bitch about that until I feel like stopping :)

Sounds like you need to borrow some KY or Vaseline from Shari:D
