where to find a decent men's suit?

Recommended Posts

OK, I know I'm an idiot for asking a bunch of skydivers.:S Anyway, I rarely wear a suit (i'm a scientist), so I don't know squat.

A couple years ago I bought a suit at Mens Wearhouse, but the top was sized to fit my chest, which is a bit bigger than my waist.

I think that when they make suits they expect men to be at least as big in the waist as the chest. Anyway, the top fits my chest, but then kinda hangs down & looks baggy over the rest of me. Like they expected me to be fat. So it sort of billows out & makes me look a lot fatter than I am.

Does anyone make suits that have a more trim type of cut to them?

Sounds like you got the Executive Cut you must have been important or at least shaped like an executive :P

I buy almost all of mine from Men's Wearhouse. The thing to do is just get the damned things tailored.

If it isn't tailored to your liking, give it make and have them retailor it. I often have issues with my shoulders being rather broad, which makes a large flap between the shoulder blades that needs adjusting.

Tailors can make the necessary adjustments, and it often requires three or four returns until they get it right.

I get my suits from Jos A. Bank. They've done a good job of fitting them for me.

I have a bunch from there. You can buy suit pants separately from the jacket and they sometimes have some great clearance deals.

I've bought my suits at various places. In the end. you need to find a store that caries cuts that fit you. That said, a good stoire will still make adjustments to make it fit perfectly, ie hemming both sleeves and legs of course, but also relocating the buttons slightly.

I hatre to break it to you, but you'll have to try a few places. You can also go to a large department store as they will carry more selection, and therefore more cuts.

It used to be that the standard drop (difference between chest size and waist size) was 6", and the athletic cut drop was 8".

If you buy nicer suits, most have a 6" drop (e.g. 44 jacket -> 38 waist). If you are athletic, this may require a re-build to the pants. This means opening the side seams, as well as the rear seam, to remove material. Otherwise the pockets get too close together.

Key is to find a good tailor. Decent stores have them on staff. Otherwise, an independent tailor can set you up.

Custom suits cost more but should fit perfectly. In CA, there are Hong Kong tailors who come to town to take orders. Also, many business schools do a deal with Hickey Freeman for 1/2 off custom suits. The student rep could care less who you are as long as they get their commission.

I goto K&G for my Suits. Good selection and reasonable prices. I have to get the Athletic Cut.. Which is a Joke because I am about as UnAthletic as you can get.. But that is the only way I can get a 32 waist and have pants legs long enough. Same with the Jackets.. Small Chest (42) but LONG arms. Still takes some tailoring to get the right fit but K&G is pretty reasonable there too.
I have to wear a suit at least 3 days a week usually.[:/]
