grue 1 #1 April 15, 2007 Is it possible to combine outputs from a stereo source (e.g. a standard headphone minijack) into a mono output to power a single headphone with more power and higher volume than the individual headphones would be in stereo?cavete terrae. JustChuteMeNow 0 #2 April 15, 2007 I don't think I answer your specific question but in general terms concerning audio amplification the volume knob when it goes clockwise really makes things louder. Put another way it amplifies the sound. Reverse this technique for softer. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that. No, by switching the signal to mono you will not get any more power or volume gain or gain in DB, without passing the signal thru a amplifier of some kind. If your using headphones or ear buds, the speakers won't handle the power at a large volume gain, hell they distort as it is without power. It would help to know more of what your trying to hear/listen to, it would seem you want to add power to the signal to add volume???you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Ok, sounds like you need to pass the signal thru a power amp and maybe back to a mixer for audio level control and then to your recorder.you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

grue 1 #9 April 15, 2007 Short version: I'm trying to build a small headphone/speaker into my helmet so I can listen to music on the ride to altitude, and I'll make a little mounting clip for my music player if I can get it to play loud enough to hear over an airplane.cavete terrae. stratostar 5 #13 April 15, 2007 Then your screwed, unless you can, 1. find a better music player with a volume control, but use good speakers in your helmit. or 2. get a hearing aid. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

stratostar 5 #15 April 15, 2007 Hey, I just thought of something. You can get a small amp about the size of a ipod, called a "rockman" at a music store, there for jam'n on your E.guitar when you only want hear yourself on the headphones, it has volume and and gain control. So you could send your audio signal into it and back out to your phones, and you will hear it in the plane!you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo
countzero 7 #16 April 15, 2007 IIRC headphone type devices are limited in how much volume they can produce for safety reasons. i.e. to avoid hearing loss lawsuits. thus summing stero signal into a mono one with it's origional playing device wont yeild more volume. to achieve what you want you'd need an external amplifier between the outputs of your device and the speaker. plus you'd need a power source for said external amplifier. though there are small digital amplifiers and there may be ones that can be battery powered. to me it just seems like alot of extra things to stuff into a helmet just for tunes.diamonds are a dawgs best friend

Yeah, I thought about one of the little inline amps, but they're really a bit too big and clunky, and then I have to worry about batteries and stuff. My extra iPod is only about the size of the last digit on my thumb, so it's not going to take up my room, especially the way I'm gonna install it. I think I have my plan, I just need to get my hands on a cheap pair of over the ear headphones to try it cavete terrae.
