Has anyone ever heard of using a sabre as a reserve?

Can anyone tell me how common it is to use mains for reserves ?

Very uncommon. There are very very few canopies regularly used as mains that can also be used as a reserve.

In the USA it'd be illegal to use a PD Sabre as a reserve, as it's not been certified for that purpose.

First, to be a reserve in the US it needs to be certified as passing TSO standerds. The Sabre was never intended to be used as a reserve so it was never tested as such. The current reserves on the market that you should look at are the PD Reserve and the PD
Optimum, the Icarus Reserve, Percision's Raven series, and Flight Concepts reserve series. Thats the major US makers that still are putting out reserves. Your choices are limited, but there are some great choices in this bunch.

Have I heard of a Sabre used as a reserve? Yes?

Was it legal? Nope.:D

Not so sure I'd want a ZP reserve. When ZP fails, it fails in a big way.

Interesting question. I've heard of it too but I'm not sure I believe it but it's certainly possible. It was not long after the Sabre was introduced to the market.
