So I'm going to talk to some USAF people about OTS.

Recommended Posts

Apparently it works a little differently than I thought. Seems I can apply for a pilot slot, and if I don't get it, I can walk. I had always thought it'd be "join, ask for pilot, end up greasing wheels" or something.

I wanted to be a fighter pilot since I was a little kid, and it seems there's no harm into actually looking into it at this point.

I think you would make a better Drill Sargeant.
:P

Think of all the more nudie pics you could hang on your barracks room wall instead of on the inside of your cockpit canopy.
My reality and yours are quite different.

hmmm for real??? What about eyesight requirements? They allow you getting them "lasered" to 20/20.
I once told a recruiter i'd sign up for 20 years if they let me fly their planes. He said can't do it, you have bad eyes.

Anyway, good luck to you!!

These days if you're within a certain range, they'll pay for the PRK surgery (not LASIK) to correct your vision.

Are you sure about that? And if you are talking to a recruiter be careful ;) They have been known to tell you exactly what you want to hear.

dude are you fn serious??!!
I might have to look into this. I may be too old for their requirements. I am definitely small enough though, by that I mean height beotches!!

Again, good luck to you. I could still put in 20 years.

Even if he's not... I am... the Air Force does pay for PRK if that can be used to correct your eyesight. (I happen to have good eyesight and don't need it but even I would be elegible regardless of the fact that I'm not a pilot)

Its also probably true that if you end up not being able to get into pilot training, and chose to seperate that you are likely to be able to so...

For what its worth... on the Officer side of the Air Force recruiters don't seem to intentionally tell people "what someone wants to hear" especially considering the process to get in via OTS is actually rather competitive (probably has something to do with piloting multi-million dollar aircraft... ;))

in fact when I was going through the process I was told my preplacement test scores weren't good enough to be a pilot (though since I was joining to be an engineer that didn't bother me much)

Oh, and Paul, I'm not sure what the Age cut-off is but I could probably find out if you'd like... (though I was 27 when I went through OTS)

I know someone that was all set to go to OTS then they found the slightest bit of colorblindness and grounded him despite already having over 200 hours as a pilot. Now he's in the Air Force band since he had to rejoin to be eligibile for OTS and it was theskill he was best suited for.

They are called "instructions" these days.....freakin toads changed that name a while back. And yep, after training AF student pilots for 6 years (I was a lowly physiology instructor), I saw people wearing glasses, contacts, all kinds of laser eye surgery.

I stand corrected.

That is pretty damn interesting!

Granted does me no good, my eyes are shot :D Astigmatism in both, slightly near sighted in one and slightly far sighted in the other. Left can only be corrected to 20/30 with glasses or contacts though [:/]

*pouts* I want to fly a plane!

Wait I told the AF no many moons ago about joining as a geek :D

Realize that OTS slots are few and far between. You are third priority, after USAFA and ROTC, who have put more time in for their commission.

OTS slots are tied to the AFSC, so if you do not make it thru UPT, you're out entirely.

Dude I would get that in writting from them first. That sounds a little funky to me. I did 8 year in the AF.

Yeah, obviously I won't do anything until I'm absolutely sure, but the way it's been explained to me is that I take all the tests BEFORE I sign up, and they can tell me if I'll get a pilot slot at OTS. If they say no, I just walk away. Seems like a win/win, pretty much.

Good luck Grue! What an incredible dream!!!!

My cousin and his wife are both fighter pilots in the AF (both AF academy grads). Took them a few years to actually fly the jets (both have been in the service now for 10 years - have served in North Korea / and now being deployed to Iraq). You might want to clarify that as well.

they generally do color tests like these: http://www.toledo-bend.com/colorblind/Ishihara.html and seeing "different" colors is probably not as big a deal as long as you can differentiate colors effectively in both eyes.
