So I'm going to talk to some USAF people about OTS.

I had LASIK done, and I'm permanently disqualified from all pilot positions at this time. I don't know how they would change the regulations if they ever do, but it sucked. My grandfather was a pilot and eventually a flight commander and Lt.Col. in the USAF. I wanted to be a fighter pilot since I was a little kid but have worn glasses since second grade. After I got LASIK, I worked at the USAF Institute of Technology (graduate school for the AF) and someone told me I was eligible. I can't even fly helicopters for them. I guess I'm stuck with my cushy consultant job.

Apparently it works a little differently than I thought. Seems I can apply for a pilot slot, and if I don't get it, I can walk.

You'll be able to walk back to the messhall for KP. B|

I've never heard of anybody enlisting, going to OCS/OTS and not getting the MOS they wanted, then being able to just ditch their contract. :S

I talked to an ex AF controller that had 4 officers working with him that have been waiting on their flight school slots for over a year each right now. They were told they were accepted into flight school but the list is up to 18 month wait unless you are the top 1-2 in your class. These guys were told "Here is another MOS until you go to school" so they are stuck in the AF doing other things until they get into flight school.
Yesterday is history

The way it was explained to me is that you get the acceptance to OTS, and THEN enlist. That could be totally wrong, however. Realistically, I'm not sure I'd be willing to sign away ten years of my life anyway, it's something I'd have to think long and hard about.

OCS is the Army not the Air Force... :P but yeah... you get accepted to OTS then are sworn in as a Staff Sgt (E-5) report to Maxwell AFB in Alabama. Spend 12 weeks in the heat and humidity learning all about what is means to be an Officer in the Air Force then get sworn in as a 2nd Lt.

I know I did it... :P

Good to know though, I'm gonna keep looking into this.
