Canopy Sizes in a J1

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I recently purchased a new main and reserve, and I thought I had a container lined up, but it seems the deal might have fallen through. I've found another container I love, but it might be a touch small. It's a Jav J1, and my canopies are a Safire 169 (measured on PD's scale as a "156" so pack vol. is smaller) and a Smart 160 reserve. Does anyone have experience with this size combination? I know sunpath says 150 main and 150 reserve, but I really love this container, and I'd like to make it work. And yes I know my W/L is a little high, and believe me, the downsize was cleared with all the coaches and instructors at my DZ.
God made firefighters so paramedics would have heroes...and someone can put out the trailer fires.

Are you going to pack it?

Because it's not going to be comfortable to pack. I'm sure if you try hard enough you can stuff it in there (the main at least -- I'm not nearly as convinced that the reserve will fit), but it won't be fun. And if you're planning on having someone else do it, remember that when you're tipping them.

Sounds kind of silly to me, to pack a main that's on the small side for you, into a rig that's on the small side for it, and combine that with a reserve that's even more on the small side for you. Hope you never have to use that reserve when you're in a tight spot :|

I had a Safire 149 (only the 1 measures "small."). It wasn't bad to pack in there, but it wasn't exactly loose either. There's not THAT much less fabric.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

You won't be able to get the Smart in the reserve container with out overstuffing it. A Smart 160 packs very similar in size to a PD 160. A 160 in a J2 is about as large as you want to go, in a J1 its not going to fit correctly.
