A French high-speed train (TGV) has smashed the world record for a train on conventional rails by a big margin, reaching 574.8km/h (356mph).

Cool. 1 hour LA to Vegas. 2 hours LA-SFO. Less than 7 hours LA to NYC.

Never happen in the US. People seem to think railroad crossings are reserved parking for their SUVs. B|B|B|

nor do we seem to be willing to build separate tracks for passenger trains:S

Sure they do. The mono-rail at Disneyworld is on a seperate track.

Sadly less than half that fast when in service.

Indeed...
In Shanghai, the Maglev train goes over 400km in service. The "friction free" feeling is quite nice as well. For the time being, though, its itinerary is quite useless (form the airport to a suburb of Shanghai), but they are currently building an extension to the line which will be very usefull (to the Shanghai train station, then to the other airport, then to a city south of Shanghai). Great technology (siemens originally).
