GQ_jumper 4 #1 October 22, 2006 I've heard a few riggers say that they've opened up pack jobs and recognized their own pack job, or another rigger that they know. I'm just curious as to what it is about the pack job that lets you recognize it.History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. councilman24 37 #2 October 22, 2006 Every rigger does things just a little different. Narrowing folds, folding the nose cells, tacking the toggles, folding the bridle, and a dozen other things. None of them are wrong, just different. I might not recognize my pack job but I'd certainly know if it wasn't mine. There is one thing that I do that most riggers don't. GQ_jumper 4 #4 October 22, 2006 I was just kind of curious after i heard a story about a rigger opening a pack job that was supposed to have been kept current for the past 8 months by a different rigger than when he opened it rexognized the pack job as his own and the last tiem he touched it according to the pack card was 8 months ago, so it was obviously pencil packed.History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. sid 1 #5 October 22, 2006 when I open my own sport rig I recognize it by the cobwebs.......Pete Draper, Just because my life plan is written on the back of a Hooter's Napkin, it's still a life plan.... right?
lauras 0 #6 October 22, 2006 I can identify my own pack jobs but I can spot one of Sally Hathaway's faster, from across the loft no problem. Tidy, tidy, tidy. I apprenticed with her and was taught how to pack without clamps, straps or weights and while I'm neat, her pack jobs look picture perfect. It's impressive.,,and a little nauseating! Edit to add: I can pretty much identify anyone who's worked in Sally's loft. Jody, Ryan, Kerry, Aaron & I all have different styles but there's this weird similarity when you pull the bag off. I don't quite understand it, but I just know it when I see it.

masterrig 1 #8 October 23, 2006 On two or three occasions, I recognized my pack job. On all those occasions, another (local) rigger's signature was on the packing data card. I had a (one sided) discussion with him. I have 'little' things I do that I can recognise in my pack jobs... I'm not tellin'! Chuck
highspeeddirt 0 #9 October 23, 2006 i had a tandem resrve come in for repack several years ago.the card said i had last packed it,but there was no seal, and the handwriting did not match.(.it also was not in my rigging logbook) when i started to disect the packjob, it became very clear to me that it was not my work.i informed the boss at the loft i was working at , i wanted to report it to the faa. he said no and i would be fired if i did.so yes i can identify my work.and i think most riggers can id theirs too. councilman24 37 #11 October 23, 2006 You need to find a new boss. We all have to make compromises in our careers but illegal actions and life safety issues are not some that we should make. I have the luxury of not having to make my living in the skydiving industry, (yet). I've had several people forge my name. They're call ex-customers. But I've never had someone pack it and then put my name on it. Why go to the effort of packing it but not have a real rigger do it? I won't ask if it was the bosses handwriting.I'm old for my age. riggerrob 643 #12 October 23, 2006 You need a new boss. No job pays well enough for that form of psychological abuse/intimidation. Several ex-bosses have treated me like that. Note the emphasis on "EX-BOSS." On the other hand, I used to have a boss who quietly deleted $60 from clients' accounts every time I accused them of pencil-packing. I don't care if you pencil-pack one of my pack jobs ... I just expect to get paid $60 every time my name appears on your card!
highspeeddirt 0 #13 October 23, 2006 i agree. thats why i no longer work for him.i wont mention names, but the dz involved(where the rig came from) has had a tandem fatality .and the boss involved has reincorporated once or twice and changed locations.
