saw it in the theater. then twice on dvd....

very good study of the intracasies of a not so unsual family....

quite the blend of reality, happiness, sadness, excitement, boredom, aspirations, regrets....and accomplishments.

all in one 'blended' family...
the spouses were on their second marriage, the step brother and step sister were accurately portrayed as, despondent teen and excited child, the Uncle was 'diagnosed' as troubled, but in fact was quite with it and 'sane', the grandfather WAS offbeat, but his philosphy of life,,, worked for me....
The loyalty, and cohesiveness which was eventually demonstrated by these varying personalities, was heartwarming,,,, in that it gave hope to ALL families, everywhere....
.We all have our share of characters,,,, within our lives and within those around us and often it can be that weird mixture of seemingly incompatible individuals,, which can make for a cohesive UNIT......

Not sure why it has been deemed a comedy,,, though there were many funny , ironic, and humerous parts to it... I would instead call it a "dramedy"... since it touches on many many sensitive subjects...and does so in a light way...

i liked that the real 'assholes' were the characters who this family runs into ,,, such as the mass marketing dude,,, who had NO sympathy for the father and HIS dream,,, the hospital lady whose false compassion was palpable,, the pageant director who was a true Bitch,,,and some of the pageant parents....
The cool folks , met along the way, included the VW mechanic who showed them how to push-start the van,,,,the computer GUY, who was willing to register Olive, even though she was 5 minutes late,,,,The father with the headphones,, who stood UP and Cheered for the dancing Family,,,, and yes even that asshole motorcycle cop who fortunately got distracted by the porno mags.....
All in all a thought provoking film, which rocked, in spite of the fact that there was not ONE outrageous film set, not one gunfight, and NO computer generated effects..... just good dialouge, and believable acting.....
see it...

Yeah. "Dramedy" is a good description. Lots of real-life problems along with the funny stuff.

That is how I described it, a dramatic comedy. Wasn't sure at first but in the end I really enjoyed it. Especially liked how they made those child beauty pagents look as stupid as they really are.
