Never been much of a hirobo fan, at all. Rapters are the jam. Tons of cheap upgrade parts available, with a lot of the pros using them as practice helis. Seriously, I couldn't think of a cheaper heli to fix, when you need to. And with 3D, you will need to. ;)

Don't know much about the skyskipper. Couldn't find that much on the internets about it either, though I wasn't looking that hard.

What's making you lean towards a .50 over a .60+? Are you able to do CCPM with your radio? I am a REALLY big fan of direct linkages like that over mechanical mixing.

You gotta love the woof and poof of the raptor also. I have seen numerous 3-D pilots lose machines to this common malfunction.

Here is a pic of my Raptor I built in honor of my lost brothers at NYFD. The paint was done by LGM guitars in Canada. The only thing on the canopy that is not paint is the lettering. An all the anodized aluminum came from quick UK.

You know, we had that problem on only one of our raptors, and it was a hell of an issue to resolve. Come to think of it, I don't know if we ever came up for a fix for it. Constantly trying different fans and shrouds, mixtures, etc. On all our other machines, it's has been a non-issue, though we typically run really rich. Definately not an issue on my fuel or gasser xcells.

That's some real nice looking paint though, those anodized parts really shine it up (I bet you notice drastically less as compared to a stock head too!)

The reward is digitaly proportional to the the amount of time and money one is willing to sacrfice for the hobby. It's fun when you can't skydive. I recommend buying everything you can in skydiving first. Because with skydiving, it's your life, not some stupid toy.

New (over here) from JR. I doubt I will get it since it is new, and I know very little about Heli's. But one just showed up at the LHS and the owner offered me test pilot price....Which means I build it and he and the other hotshots get to fly it.

The other two options are a Raptor from a kit (about 400 bucks, unless I get the blinged out SE, which I don't know if I really need).

Or a buddies used Sceadu EVO. He will sell me the Sceadu for 200.00 and I could then get it and the Hyper .50 for the same price as a Rappy kit.

I have been told:
1. A .50 will be able to do more things than I can do, so I have plenty of time to stick with a .50.
2. .50's cost less to buy.
3. .50's cost less to fix.
4. .50's cost less to run.
5. A .50 with a Hyper in it has about the same power to weight as a good .90.

Is any of that wrong?

Are you able to do CCPM with your radio?

Yes, JR 9103.

It seems that the Sceadu and Rappy are about the same...And about the same as PD vs. Aerodyne.

BTW whats woof and poof?

Ok all u r/c people, whats more fun, heli's or planes?

Both. Helis are more fun *for me* since I have been doing planes for so long. They are also more expensive and harder to fly. Just this past week I put almost 70.00 bucks into my heli, and I didn't even crash it. A part just wore out and since I had it apart I replaced the parts it interfaced with.

Having said that planes kept me excited for about 20 years and I still enjoy my planes and fly them when I can. They are a little harder to transport and while I have a 5 X 10 foot trailer I take them to the field in...I don't have a trailer hitch on my new car yet so they have not seen much air. Plus the heli's are new and shiney to me.

Quote

is it better to learn to fly planes first?

Great question....My opinion I would say its better to learn planes first since there is a ton of MX on heli's, setting up a heli is still hard for me, heli's are harder to fly, heli's are more expensive to buy and to crash (OK, *crashing* does not cost any more than a plane, but *Fixing* costs a bunch more:P). You can get a good plane trainer with everything for about 400. A heli will be much closer to 1,000.

Having said that I know a few guys that have never flown a plane and a few other heli guys that have just started to fly planes.

Hell, its fun when you could skydive.
It does not matter to me if I go to the DZ, flying field, or airport to fly full scale.

Everything else you said I agree with 100%.

Just back from my first r/c swap meet. Was leaving the place after 30 minutes when this guy was was walking in with a sweet little sea plane. I found a new home for my old motor and radio.B|

What is it? Do you have a photo?

Pic's of mine attached. Notice what's written on the floats. OS FS.91 engine.

Check your thrust barrings and dampners. When I replaced mine it went away until they became worn.

Nice cub you have there. I'll have to get one of those someday. It's a stick 40 with huge Gee Bee floats made for 40- 60 size planes. Might be a little sluggish with a .46 Evolution, but i think i'll put a 3 blade prop on it and see if it will fly. Might have to "quad-flap" it like the new Ultra Stick i'm working on. So i have 2 Twists and 2 Sticks now and a new radio. My r/c budget is done for the year and i think i'm going to lose a little weight the next few months.B|

I think if you go with the raptor, I wouldn't get the SE, kinda eliminates the reasons for buying a cheap to fix heli like the raptor in the first place you know? There'll be a little more slop in the head, but not painfully so, in my opinion. I love my little raptor .30.

I've not really heard about the Hyper .50. .50 is a good choice, I'd say everything you've heard is probably correct.

The 9103 JR's are awesome, I have a couple 8013's and they can do pretty much anything I'd ever need for mixing.

As for the thrust bearings, we've replaced all bearings (my initial thought after replacing the fan shroud was that something was wrong in the power line). It's currently hanging on the wall, so I could care less. ;)

I do have to say that I really love the weight and torque behind my xcell gasser. It's nice to be able to go to the field with a can of gas, the heli, and the transmitter, and be set for the day.

There is a guy who flys out at our field who has the vario turbine conversion, and god if that thing isn't sex on a stick. :P

Just melted my credit card with a JR8103PCM Heli radio. Came in 3 days ago. My Hi-tec Flash 5 still rocks, but i had to buy my last radio i'll ever need.
Last interference glitch influenced the buy. Oh and i needed a few more flap options.:S But hey, i'll be ready for a heli when the time comes.

But John, what does the AMA have to say about rocket planes. ;)

Those are really slick though. If estes rockets weren't so expensive, and I wasn't afraid to pour my own, I'd actually consider those. :)

I like theway the Raptor works....Then again I am kinda a sick puppy.:P

If you have the EVO...Well that says something to me...Not sure what, but something;)

Seriously, if you like the EVO that about settles it for me.

Your sea plane is sweet. I am SO tempted to get the new GP seawind. But to be honest I don't have a place to fly it...So Im kinda safe right now.

Its the "new?" OS with the blue head.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHGN9&P=0

1.9 HP vs 1.8 for the normal OS .50.

It costs more (209.99 vs 149.99), but people here swear by it and they have a 30.00 rebate.

Since I know nothing about helis....I walked into the LHS (who I trust) and said, "Look, I don't know what I am doing with heli's, but I trust you. Give me some good stuff that you think is a good deal."

He gave me a 9103, some DS811's, a 401 Gyro with the wiz bang Futaba Digital servo, and a Venture .50 that was hanging on the ceiling with a normal OS.50 in it.

I got the radio for 610.00, the Heli and engine for 150.00, the Gyro for 201.00
