Jinxie 0 #30 March 7, 2007 My husband of 22 years started talking about skydiving shortly after my daughter started dating Bailey Jnr, who himself is a skydiver...(yup, thanks Bailey!!! lol ) Being something that Mike and I have always talked about, off we went to JSC...did the static line training with Derek and Sharky and then the AFF conversion training with Chris B and Bev. I only really started getting nervous whilst we were doing our malfunction drills in the harness and got so flustered that I could not concentrate Anyway, thank God the weather was too crappy that afternoon to jump and we spent the evening at a nearby guest house. I was terrified of telling Mike that I was afraid to jump for fear of letting him down. I kept quiet, and although I am not a religious person, I prayed all night for rain! And guess what? I poured the next day!!! I was thrilled!!!!! During the following week, I swallowed my pride and told my husband that although I love tandem...AFF just was not for me. I thought he would be dissappointed, he wasn't. The next problem for me ..... how would I get him to not jump? I was besides myself for days. This is the only man I have ever loved...and I could lose him in the blink of an eye! I don't know life without Mike! We have tewo kids! There were so many what if's....why's...and so on..ofcourse I read every incident report I could get my hands on, every fatality....everything "bad". I have spent many hours at the drop zone over the past four months waiting for him to jump and watching him jump....many of them on "calmettes" a mild tranquiliser. I was at the drop zone on the day Dian had his accident ........... I know that I am waffling on here but seriously, I have never seen such joy or excitement on my husband's face as when he jumps and I have never seen him so miserable or frustrated as when he can't! I have to put my own fears aside because ultimately....I would rather see him happy flying...than existing on his knees....if that makes sense? He does live his dreams and I want to live them with him...hopefully for a long time to come. I have to trust his judgement and be confident in the decisions he makes and pray that he carries on learning and practising everything he has been taught and moreMinds are like parachutes -- they only function when open. -- Thomas Dewar
mnskydiver688 0 #31 March 7, 2007 My girlfriend gets very mad when I act more excited about jumping than seeing her. She knows that if she ever got in the way of my jumping things might go bad, so she makes compromises. Just like when I compromise and wear padded armor for one week every month.Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
philly51 0 #32 March 7, 2007 I had a girlfriend that complained that all I cared about was skydiving, going out to dinner and sex. I told her she (a whuffo) was batting .666 with me. She told me that there was more to life than any of those 3 items. She's now batting .000 Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, Shouting "...holy shit...what a ride!" DrewEckhardt 0 #33 March 7, 2007 Quote Do you all actually know anybody who has been told right out to choose between a marriage/relationship and jumping? My wife told me I never have to jump off a cliff again. Who'd actually want some one they love risking death and serious injury? She's also said that we should get a new digital camera so she can take pictures of me parachuting. I'm very pretty when I land. I do pay a lot more attention to currency and have more reservations about oraganized events. It's not nice taking your SO with you and having some one die ten feet away. Fozz 0 #34 March 7, 2007 mmm...after reading this it occurs to me...being single isn't so bad. I want a new motorcycle I go buy one. I decide to go skydiving again after 20 years away from it, I do it. I think to myself #@%! why did I ever quit (it was a good reason at the time but NOT SO related) so now I'm current and have my own rig and NO DRAMA. I know people (both men and women) who have been told to quit racing motorcycles or become single again and is seems invariably the end up single. As a group we (people in high risk sports) tend to fulfill our own needs a not depend on others much. I think this might be part of the way and why we prioritize the way we do.John Fosgate "In the end, its always best to choose the hard right over the easy wrong." Unstable 9 #35 March 7, 2007 Ya know - I just made it pretty clear when I got into a relationship that Saturday was when I helped out at the DZ and it was something I really enjoyed. I think you need to get started off right to avoid any problems like that in the future.=========Shaun ==========
yardhippie 0 #36 March 7, 2007 Its my wife's fault I skydive. She bought me my first jump for my Bday. Now if she gives me any grief, I just remind her how I got my start! grue 1 #37 March 7, 2007 Funny story from Eloy Holiday Boogie '05... the girl I was dating at the time had a DEEP dislike of the sport, because she was convinced I was going to die. The subject was never open for discussion, so I never got to really talk to her about it. I had no intention of telling her about the cutaway I had a few days prior until she brought up the sport, so she didn't know about it. I was at the bonfire with wildcard451 and a few others when she called. I walked a few feet away to talk to her, and wildcard walked up and, knowing her feelings, yelled "HEY STEVE! DID YOU TELL YOUR GIRLFRIEND ABOUT YOUR CUTAWAY??" The next thing I heard was the phone going "click" cavete terrae.
Dumpster 0 #38 March 7, 2007 mmmmm - Sort of had that ultimatum. In my experience - Skydiving in and of itself doesn't neccesarily destroy a relationship. But it can lead to the degradation of an otherwise weak one. Easy Does It

stevebabin 0 #41 March 7, 2007 I have known for a long time that my wife feels it's in her interest to be married to a happy man. Skydiving is my passion, and she understands how lucky I am to have found that passion so early in life and pursue it as fully as I have. It would be hard to imagine her asking me to give it up. That being said, however, If she came to me and said that my skydiving was truly making her unhappy, and asked me to stop, I would stop. Right now. I can find a new passion. ymmv...."Science, logic and reason will fly you to the moon. Religion will fly you into buildings." "Because figuring things out is always better than making shit up." Zipp0 1 #44 March 7, 2007 I heard this. My response was "I made my decision already, now make yours." I figured it was a bluff, and I was right. I mean, if I said "It's me or shopping" would she stop buying shit we don't need? Should I be worried since I just bought a motorcycle? It's not parked in the living room though. She's not happy about it, but no ultimatum this time. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.
