Learning Excel. More Geek stuff from RW

Recommended Posts

I was fiddling with Excel, and sorted my logbook out into Aircraft order with subtotals. I made some errors in nomenclature that split some totals, (e.g. C206 and C 206) but it's still interesting to see the total number of jumps I've made on various aircraft over almost 29 years. (My log is accessible in my sig line)

I'll be changing the order over the next few weeks. Probably sorted out by DZ next.

I have kept an Excel spreadsheet of my jumping activity for years. Actually I started it after my gear and logbook got stolen in McMinnville, TN in 1998. I have a page for DZ's jumped, sorted by number of jumps each year at each DZ, with most jumped DZ at the top and in order of jumps made at each... Another page for all the different aircraft jumped and jumps made from each, another for jumps made in each month of each year, and another for jumps made on each canopy and rig I have used, owned and borrowed, and another with all my ratings and license numbers, and another for all the accomplishments including state and world records and special demo jumps, etc...

I know, maybe I'm crazy, but it helps to keep everything together in one place. :P

I did something very similiar. Created an Excell spreadsheet with all my jumps on it. Some things I have discovered:

17 types of aircraft jumped
20 different canopy types, not including multiple sizes
22 different DZ's

I also include notes, camera, competitions, etc.

Here a page of my planes jumped from. Note that the "Wild Flamingo" Porter is the one used in the movie Drop Zone with the bomb bay doors.

Actually, I started with Foxbase, which is a Dbase III type of program. I still USE it, in fact. I just use Excel to import a text file logbook report generated by Foxbase and clean it up.

I don't really know 2% of what there is to learn about Excel, but I'm working on it.

I still have paper logs, however. My tandem students sign their jumps and comment.
