ACMESkydiver 0 #1 February 26, 2007 Sorry, I don't mean to be dramatic, but man some things... It's 'P. Family vs. Kent School District, round 536' tomorrow. I JUST got a call today from one of our boys' OT/PT's at school saying that he thinks they should discontinue OT/PT service because they aren't improving. WTF?!? Oh no you are NOT giving up on my sons because it is too much bother for you. I know the law will be on my side, but with the IEP meeting tomorrow, getting a call just 24 hours prior to us inking their plan -I feel sucker-punched. Again, sorry for the dramatics. I am pissed off. Carry on with your happy threads. PS...no they can NOT do this legally. I know that; it just pisses me off when people want to try to get the parents to roll over and take the easy route out when you are talking about such disabled little boys. Their 30 minutes a week with each boy is NOTHING compared to what these boys have to try to deal with every minute of every freaking day.~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. Squeak 17 #8 February 26, 2007 Good luck Jaye, try to not get too emotive when you front them, arguments from distraught mothers go largely unheard. Calm and direct is generally much more effective Good advice; another reason why I never 'go off' on someone when they first deliver the news to me... I gather my info on IDEA and Wa state laws...then I ask them what their solutions are, then I give them my plan. Then if they start to say, 'We can't do that...' I just say that IDEA part whatever and Washington state reg whichever says you can...I'll help you if you need to ask administration for additional funding to cover. I am actually pretty professional when we do these meetings. I just have to blow some steam off before I put on the ice cold business-woman act for the district, ya know? I think that's probably what frustrates them so much -they can't rattle me (Well, they do, but they NEVER see it. ) Thanks for letting me vent, guys. I am gathering my reasearch right now...~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.

sunshine 2 #15 February 27, 2007 Jaye, why are you even asking for luck? You know you don't need it. You are one kickass mom. You do what you know is best for your boys and you will always make sure they get what they need and deserve. You'll go in tomorrow and everything will go smooth. No luck needed. Those boys are lucky as can be to have you. And even if they don't show it all the time, you know they love you. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! ACMESkydiver 0 #18 February 27, 2007 Thanks again everyone...42, Sunny, Michele, GJ. I appreciate it, I do. Wading through a sea of Special Education Law is so mind-numbing! I HATE it when these bozos pull this *%&$ the day before the meeting. I don't think the teachers had malicious intent on this one...just lack of initiative to inform me that they felt that this direction wasn't working. Funny they never mentioned it in the daily notes I get home. I was searching under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) & couldn't find anything! I think I need to look under FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education). ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) is kind of the catch-all, last hope. I'm sure it's right here I'm just going too fast and missing it... Grrr....I will find it. I will find it.~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. I know it's frustrating and seemingly a never-ending battle but you know who and what it's for and that makes it all worth the effort. Sic 'em! My reality and yours are quite different. Rainbo 0 #22 February 27, 2007 I can understand how you feel. We dealt with some similar issues with the school district my son attends when he was youger, after he was diagnosed with Tourette's. We made sure they understood our position and the that we knew the laws. They ended up working with us as they should have, and luckily things have gone well for Alex. Hold your ground and good luck to all of you.Rainbo TheSpeedTriple - Speed is everything "Blessed are those who can give without remembering, and take without forgetting." ACMESkydiver 0 #23 February 27, 2007 Pops, Rainbo, Bigun...it's cyclical. Sometimes they work well, then about this time of the year they start bailing on us. I won't agree to the IEP change. That's the short-term answer. Thanks for the link GJ. The ACLU loves a good fight, though they don't tend to be involved with children and education...but like I said, they love to fight. Might be just the type of ally we need right now -one with some political muscle. Nobody screws with the ACLU. I will be meeting with the congressman within the next few months (if our schedules match up)...I think I'll bend his ear to this challenge. Edit: government is confusing. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
sartre 0 #24 February 27, 2007 Jaye, if your therapists have decided that they can make no more progress, it's time to insist on new therapists. Fresh eyes/attitudes/approaches are sometimes called for. Sounds like you don't need this advice, but be persistent. I have therapists who whine about every patient they have who is too much of a challenge, and I have therapists who never give up. Believe me, if you refuse to lay down and roll over, they'll listen to you. Good luck and best wishes.....
