riggerrob 643 #26 November 21, 2006 To answer your question- Since when is the main flap closed in the proper direction on a racer protect the pin from the relative wind in a stand or a sit? Unless they have changed it is two skinny tuck tabs or velcro facing the BOC . The relative wind in a sit or stand can blow that open. This is why they are not free fly friendly. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> According to your logic, we should not freefly with Javelin or Infinity. Besides the NOS has the tuck tabs on the shoulders. That's my preference, too. The NOS still has double tuck tabs over the shoulders and tabs on the main flap. Everything is tight and the rig fits and moves with you like a glove...and of course nothing out there is more comfortable. I like #5...not a big fan of pin stripes. I think my first racer had them but my last few have not.Miami

Spizzzarko 0 #30 November 21, 2006 *******YAWN******** Asking the general populous what rig you should buy is like asking everyone at the bar what chick you should take home. 75% are going to tell you to take the 18 year old Paris Hilton look alike home. Little do they know that she will be shitty in the sack, and most of your buddies will not believe that she stooped so low as to go home with your mangey ass. 20% are going to tell you to take home the average looking girl. She will be ok, but will be kind of clingy and keep calling you later on. The smart 5% are going to tell you to take the ugly girl home. She will probably rock your world, and make you breakfast the next morning. Just like rigs they all serve the same purpose, but it is just a matter of personal preference. The new racers are good, but just not that popular. Some people may tell you that a racer is a shitty rig to freefly in, or to do crew with. These same people may also tell you that riggers do not like racers. Those people need to spend less time spouting off at the keyboard with their "opinions" and more time actually researching gear. Modern Racers stay shut. Look at the older Chronicle series of free fly video's (circa late 90's) and you will see many of the "Pioneers" of freeflying jumping racers. You will also notice some other more "Freefly Friendly" rigs having risers flopping around all over the place. Hmmmmm... Score one for the racer. Any rig can be crew unfriendly, but I hardly think that you are going to be jumping a poptop rig that has the crown extended enough to catch a line. If your pop top is creeping up enought to catch a line then you get a rigger to fix it. That just falls under general maintenance and upkeep, and having someone more experienced in the gear than yourself look it over everyonce in awhile is not a bad thing. Speaking of general upkeep and maintenance, any rigger worth their salt should be able to pack racers. Is it not true that when you get your riggers rating that you are cleared to pack reserves? I never had to get a Racer endorsement when I got my rating... Do you know why? Because there is no such thing. If your rigger decides to not pack your racer or charge you extra then you really need to be considering hiring another rigger. That shows me a lack of knowledge, skill, and confidence in a riggers own mind. There are some really amazing riggers out there, and the good ones will do Racers. Now you wouldn't want to trust your last chance to a shitty rigger would you? How you doing Mike?

Funny...I'm jumping 2 Elite NOS racers that both have tuck tabs over the shoulders and walrus teeth on the main flap. Tim, you might want to call JS to double check your facts. TMPattersonJr 0 #34 November 21, 2006 I can walk over there and check.... Ok I just talked to Peter who said the the tuck tabs are an option but they come standard with velcro. So you can get the Classic (Elite) with the newer style tuck tabs. Edited to say: I was only talking about the riser covers not the walrus teeth. Spizzzarko 0 #37 November 21, 2006 Not a problem. I hate it when people bash gear or products because it is the popular thing to do. Research the gear, and make your own opinion. I do not jump a racer, but I think it is a perfectly functional rig, and a lot of people are steered away from it because it is not that popular. I will have to admit that it is one of the MOST comfortable rigs I have ever tried on.
Spizzzarko 0 #38 November 21, 2006 Cool man. The spring would be a great time for me. I would love to get out of the Colorado spring by then as you know it is always shitty here then. I'm thinking Elsinore baby! The In-N-Out is close, and the weather was good that one time we were there before in the spring. Maybe we can catch more than the sunset load this time. NO RENTAL CARS! Yea you had better make tech this year, and I'm sure you will have a line number of about 3 or 4 hahahahahaa Staff Seargent of the Air Force is not as prestigious of a position as Chief Master Seargent of the Air Force. hahahahahaaaaa Ohhh man I am a funny guy hahahhaaaa

jdthomas 0 #41 November 21, 2006 QuoteQuote I am curious as to why you would order a racer over other rigs on the market? Why not? Miami I am intrested in what made this jumper choose racer over rigs on the market. i don't give a fuck about the rigging aspect as I can pack them with no problem. I also don't care about tuck tab contreversy either. i just want to know why this person has coosen a racer over other rigs.. pretty simple question really. what does this jumper see in a racer? was it design, cost, fit, style or other and etc? I choose my rig ( a mirage) based on what i felt to be a good design, construction and comfort as well as cosmetic appeal. My good friend loves his racer the appeal for him was the small size of the power racer. Alot of people here have blown this thread up and way out of context, i am sorry to have added to that by asking a question outside of this jumpers request. I personally like a clean looking rig with matching tapes and bindings. go for a solid color that does not fade easily. RMURRAY 1 #42 November 21, 2006 QuoteThe biggest hassle with packing Racers is that old tools are not Cypres-compatible. I struggled - for many years - with steel T-bodkins, but discarded them as soon as a German rigger told me about ghost loops (more than a decade ago). Now ghost loops are available free from Jump Shack. Ghost loops are temporary loops, inserted by the ripcord pins early in the pack job. You close the flaps the same way you would close a Javelin or Vector, and only late in the process do you change techniques to use the ghost loops to suck the (final) closing loops through the pack job. The bottom line is: if you use ghost loops, Racers are easy to pack. Steel t-bodkins - which are not Cypres-compatible - belong in the dumpster! I am not sure what method you are using and I am NOT a rigger but have you seen Jumpshacks latest reserve packing DVD? If you or anyone else wants a copy let me know - I'll send it to you for nothing.... rm
packing_jarrett 0 #43 November 21, 2006 QuoteI am intrested in what made this jumper choose racer over rigs on the market Dude I was brought up on racers. They're very unique. Pin protection is awesome on both main and reserves. Riser covers are pretty unique too. They have there own little slot that they go in. I'm a big freeflyer and haven't seen a problem with my rig. It just has the walrus teeth. I also wingsuit in my rig with no other mods to it. I don't know what it is that makes it so comfortable but it is. I also like the way that it looks simple. 4 flaps.. poptop on them all. I'm looking at 3 mirages right now and I see a wide and bulky rig. numerous reserve flaps and secondary riser covers. Many rings to trying to duplicate racers comfortability. What do you see in MIRAGE?! If all the sudden racer went out of business I would buy and infinity though.Na' Cho' Cheese
Miami 0 #44 November 21, 2006 Whoa...ok. Was just curious why someone would ask. I mean there are threads all the time of someone saying "look at my new odyssey" or "look at my new mirage g15" or something and no one says "Why would you order one of those over the other rigs on the market?". Maybe it's just me but it seems obvious why someone would pick a racer...Miami
jdthomas 0 #45 November 22, 2006 I owned a racer in the past and it was an okay rig to me but nothing great, I did not enjoy the parapack material espaically when it started to look rough and worn out. i also did not like the lack of soild cable housings in the container or riser, my Jav had the same problem as well. I looked around for awhile and tried many diffrent rigs and i can to enjoy the mirage. having said that I am not at all enjoying the new closing sequence mod that was last issued. the rig is wide and looks quite bulky, but I like it's comfort and overall style over that of the Racer. the mirage just looks more appealing to me and the construction feels more soild. I just got finished packing to Infinitys today, decent little rigs as well and for the price they seem like a great value. Thanks for your input on your likes of your racer.
