the silent, attentive and respectful movie-goer?

I swear, more and more people are proud of the fact that they are loud, obnoxious and disruptive at the movie theatres I visit. [:/]

This isn't a race issue. I'm noticing people from all walks of life who feel it is their right to talk through the movie, often about subjects that have nothing to do with the film they have paid money to disrupt.

I don't get it. Why not wait for the DVD to come out so you are disrupting nobody but you and your family and/or friends?

They can make a movie called "White Men Can't jump"..... but they can't make a movie called " Black people can't shut the fuck up during a movie."

Ok, I'm at work and that line just made me make a huge scene. So about 30 minutes ago I was drinking while I was reading over this, and that stupid line made me laugh and blow tea out my nose and aaaaaaaaall over my desk. My stupid crappy keyboard stopped working, so I had to walk over to Office Depot to buy another one, and then I had to clean off my moniter and all the paperwork on my desk.

It was totally worth it though...that was hilarous. :D

It's not just cell phones, though. It's people who comport themselves in such a manner as to present the image that they would really rather be at home chatting it up on the sofa while Jerry Springer hosts their kin.

Oh I know what you mean!:S

The cell phone part is just another segment of the disruptive chatter, I thought I was in a star trek movie once when I turned around in the theatre and saw all the 'blue-tooth blue ear blinkers' making their hollow heads look like a disco dance floor!

Picture this...

Cholon (Chinese sector of Saigon)...early 70s...movie house showing Chinese ninja-type movies...packed house.

People yelling at the screen booing the bad guys, cheering the good guys, helping the good guys by yelling, "Look out behind you!" and that sort of stuff. Throwing all kinds of stuff at the screen, standing in the seats, violently waving arms and hands about swinging imaginary swords and assorted weapons...

Freakin' downright FUN!, I tell ya'!

PS: You probably don't want to go see Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I saw Rocky Horror Picture Show eons ago, and I went to it with the correct expectations. It's more than a movie, and audience participation was/is expected. However, "Flyboys", "Crash", "The Departed", "The Illusionist" etc. are not movies I a) expect people to talk continuously through and b) bring their amped up 5- and 6-year-olds to.

This post wasn't a poll, but I'm getting the feeling that there's a general disdain for people who go to movies to see the film playing and not the mayhem created by people who "do what they want". Am I alone in wanting people to shut the eff up and go home if they want to talk through a movie?

Get back tou the smallish-er towns and communities. It's nice and quiet in the theatres here, only laughing and screams and such - no ad-lib comments . . . Quite nice actually.

No, you're not alone. It's hard for me to say pinpoint any "group" of people that talk too much in the movies, young, old, black, white, or even French. It's just one more mode of rudeness in an increasingly less polite society. Some people have an overinflated view of their importance in the world. Cut in line, act like a jerk in traffic, talk through a movie, it's all about them.

Our children have performed in dozens of recitals in their years in school, Christmas pageants, choirs, jazz bands, etc. I cringe at the behavior of some of the parents, yelling to their kids on stage, or giving out a good redneck "woohoo" when polite applause would have been more appropriate. This last item was even addressed by the school principal in his intro one time. It didn't work. Sad. [:/] And while you're at it, folks, could you dress up a little more than your sweat pants or pajama bottoms? Surely you have at least one pair of pants or a dress? We're trying to teach our kids through example here.

My wife gets all the "seat kickers" at the movies. Once, when she had had enough, she turned around to a young woman, late teens, early twenties, and asked her to stop kicking her seat. The sweet little gal told my wife that she was there first, had bought a ticket, and my wife could F-off. Her date and I had to stand there ready to duke it out while the girls sorted it out.

Not at all. I had a similar experience recently where the usher was informed and the disruptive people removed. However, that did not stop the people next to me from engaging in a conversation, even if it was hushed, with each other over an unrelated topic for most of the movie. I am convinced politeness and manners are not taught at home as it once was or in school for that matter.

I find early matinees during the week to be the best time to go and really enjoy a movie without the Ritalin/Springer crowd ruining it.

You know what? We saw Eragon last night at the cheap show. It was an early movie in a small theatre loaded with kids and they all behaved just fine. When we were in the popcorn line, we thought we had made a mistake but I was pleasantly surprised.

I liked the movie too. Funny how the kids can behave at the movies when adults can't seem to!
