Rock n Roll Hall of Fame - Van Halen

Who goes on the plaque as the front man?

It was a discussion on the radio this morning. Personally I think it should be David Lee Roth as the front man with Micheal Anthony. When I think of Van Halen I think of the original line up. The years with Sammy were called Van Halen, but it seriously was more Van Hagar then anything else.

As far as letting Sammy go along for the ceremony. I think he was part of Van Halen but he's going to get in as a solo act anyways. So maybe give him a note on the plaque w/an * next to his name.

Forget the spats the group had, it's gotta be David Lee Roth! To me, He along with the others in the band, WAS Van Halen.

Absolutely. Van Halen was the group I grew up with in high school along with everyone else. Van Halen just didn't sound right with Hagar as lead singer.

You did, just for shits and giggles.. :P

Even if I did once, that means there's another idjut who voted Sammy. BTW I didn't vote Sammy B| Not that I don't like Sammy Hagar, I just never liked him in Van Halen. I always loved his solo stuff much better. Even his stint in Montrose was better then the stuff he did with Van Halen.

Van Hagar was corporate rock... nothing more nothing less. It was produced by suits with money in their eyes. And, Van Hagar supplied it by the bushel.

Sammy wasn't the 'showman' that Roth was. When Sammy was with Van Halen, it was all about Sammy.[:/] David Lee Roth, definately has an ego but the band seemed to mesh better with him. I voted David Lee Roth!

It just doesn't matter which frontman was there. Van Halen was about Eddie, he's the reason they made it and he's the reason he made it good. IMHO he's the best guitar player on the planet. Sure you could make an argument for several others, but that's my opinion. Some of the stuff he did when Sammy was in the band was absolutely incredible, not that the Roth era wasn't, but I think the Sammy era was better Eddie.

Arguments over which lead singer in the band was better is for those that don't truly appreciate what really made the band great. I liked them both, but Eddie VAN HALEN, is what Van Halen is all about.

So, as far as the vote goes...I abstain.

Granted Eddie was a rare talent not seen very often. I agree his guitar genius is awesome. BUT greatest of all time and the only reason Van Halen had any success?

Sorry Eddie was only one of the four people who made up Van Halen. Even though it is his lastname he wasn't the end all be all of the band. Without DLR and his screams, his vocals and his antics the band would have languished as another rock band with a talented guitar player.

As far as the greatest ever... I disagree

My list would have to go:

1) Jimi Hendrix - God Father of the modern electric guitar, everyone else are just copy cats

Those who really changed the way I listen to the guitar:

1) Randy Rhodes - pure raw talent
2) Kirk Hammet - changed the metal guitarist forever
3) Rick/Rik Emmet - Classically trained artist his solos were impressive
4) Eddie Van Halen - We all know.. Eddie
5) Dimebag Darrel Abbot - all round great guy, partied many times with him and his brother.

Like I said, each have their own opinions and that's fine. I seriously doubt Van Halen would've ever gotten off the ground without Eruption, or Eddie's genius renditions of You Really Got Me and Pretty Woman. I acknowledge that DLR added image and flair to the band that became famous, but for me it was never about the vocals or showmanship of whichever frontman, it was about the guitar, plain and simple. Other people liked other aspects and that too, is fine, Like I said in my original post, you can make an argument for many as the best of all time. The ones you listed are certainly all-time greats and I respect that list. However, IMO, I still think Eddie is the best. Anyway, it's just my opinion and nothing more than that.

Psssh, please. The greatest of all time is Wesley Willis. Hands down.

If I didn't know better I'd think you were an aggie. Did you get a huge wiff of what those birds died from? :D

Dude, I was just joking around. That's just going too far. Not cool, man. Not cool. :|

That was pretty low... but you deserved it. Someone had to put you in your place. :o

what is the first song that comes to your head when you think Van Halen? For me it is DAnce the Night Away. That is David Lee Roth and if he would not have allowed cocaine to run his dang life he would have stayed right there with them. I love and respect Sammy Hagar and what he did with Van Halen as well and he should be put on the plaque as well why not both? Should list all that participated in the stardom of the group as a whole.-caress:|
I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being
right.
