info for a Spectre 170

Recommended Posts

i'm a new skydiver, i've got 41 jumps, i look to buy a rig. My question is: what's the main diffrence bettewen a 9 cell and a 7 cell, and how is it fly under a spectre 170. I'm used to a saber 2 190, is there a big difference bettewen a 190 and 170.

Sorry for ortograph mistake i'm from montréal.....

2 cells?

Yup, I graduated math class ;)

There's a lot of info for the searching:

demo a 7 cell if you can.

i got 4 jumps on a spectre 170 (thanks johnny) last week end. i've been jumping the student gear skymaster 170.

from my very limited experience: i found the spectre was very fun to fly and quite responsive to toggle input. it was also on heading immediately upon full inflation. and it seemed that the openings were smoother.

personally i plan on demoing both 9 and 7 cells when i get closer to buying gear.

I am by no means an expert, so please try them out for yourself. But I will tell you at least what I know/my experience. I started on a 200 Navigator, then went down to a 190 Sabre II. Then I went to a 190 spectre and put a good 80 jumps on it before downsizing to my 170 spectre. The flare I noticed was at a much deeper point on my 170 spectre verses the 190 sabre II. It took some practice before I found my sweet spot. The spectre is very forgiving and it packs wonderfully. When my sabre II opened, the end cells took awhile to open. When my spectre opens, I never have that problem. I've had some pretty messy pack jobs, and on my spectre, they have turned out beautiful. My accuracy also increased when I went to my 170 spectre... but that could be because of the canopy, or because I am getting more experience.

Anyways, try them out and good luck!!

That's just the steering line length. Bet you the steering lines on the sabre2 were too short. Usually PD canopies come with shortish brakelines, esp if you want to use your frontrisers you need to lengthen them.

I currently fly a Spectre 170, but my progression was a Sabre II 190 to a Spectre 190 before moving to the 170.

Would highly recommend that you try get a couple of jumps on the Spectre 190 before moving from the Sabre II 190 to the Spectre 170 so that you can feel the difference between the 9 and 7 cell canopies and how they fly differently before worrying about downsizing at the same time. I noticed a big difference between the two.

I put 60 jumps on the Spectre 190 before moving to the 170 (which I still load lightly) and was really pleased that I had that first no wind day!

I love my Spectre! Hmmm, lovely soft openings!

A Sabre2 and a Spectre are relatively similar canopies, and both are pretty damn fine. I did 400-ish jumps on my Spectre190.

How much do you weigh? Your wingloading (you + gear in lb / canopy size in sqft) has a large effect on how the Spectre 170 will fly.

For example, for someone with 41 jumps that weighs 60kg, a Spectre 170 might be a fine choice, but for someone that weighs 110kg it really wouldn't.

Wingloading Calculations
60kg is 132lb, plus 25lb for the rig = 157lb. Divide by 170 and you get a wingloading of ~0.9.

110kg is 242lb, plus 25lb for the rig = 267lb. Divide by 170 and you get a wingloading of ~1.57.

For more on why this matters, see the Performance Designs article Wingloading and its Effects.

Welcome to the sport :)
