RkyMtnHigh 0 #1 February 11, 2007 I've had a Sams Club membership and used to shop there and found that for only two of us I bought way too much and ended up storing or freezing most of what I bought. Also, the final tab at the register was HUGE! since I was buying such quantity. What are your thoughts or rationale to use or not to use a buying warehouse such as Sams Club? My SO likes Sams since he thinks he's getting a good deal on soap and toilet paper and other items..I buy 4 rolls at Publix and he comes back with 2400 rolls which is a lifetime of poopy paper I don't know..I prefer the buy as I go inventory system versus stocking up for a lifetime of anticipated usage. _________________________________________

Costco is about a thousand times better than Sam's club. Better products, better prices, better additional services. No comparison.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Do you ration it out in ziplock baggies or containers and freeze things such as hamburger meat? Yeah, the problem with buying in bulk is you think you have an endless supply and forget to replenish it. "Yeah, I have 2400 rolls of toilet paper ... umm wait a minute .. shit ... I'm out..." They treat their employees bad, etc. I refuse to buy any-thing from Sams or Wal-Fart That would be one of my concerns. Sam's is part of Walmart, so it figures their employees have sub-par pay and benefits. Costco, on the other hand, has great benefits for employees, and treats them with respect. Costco aims for a higher income group than Sam's or Walmart. Their philosophy is the best value for your money, not necessarily the cheapest product. You can shop at Costco with a little pride. With 4 kids, we're pretty smart shoppers. You can actually get many/most things as cheaply or cheaper at regular grocery stores simply by shopping the ads a little. Everything goes on sale at least once every 5-6 weeks.

Yes, yes I do And with two females in the house...bulk TP is the way to go. The stuff that doesn't go bad lasts forever. Like the vanilla coffee creamers, popcorn, ramen noodles Be yourself! freeflir29 0 #13 February 11, 2007 I go to Costco when I am home. The gas is usually cheaper there and they have the BEST salmon staks in the world. (I need a Homer Simpson drooling icon.) FLOCK! Less than two weeks and I'll be eating salmon!!!!! I really don't buy that much else there. They DO have some good frozen foods too. I buy alot of stuff to ship to Iraq from there too. Like GIANT jars of mayo, industrial packs of Ranch dressing, etc.
2fat2fly 0 #14 February 11, 2007 Since there's only two of us, it doesn't pay to buy much in bulk-I haven't had a membership in a few yearsI am not the man. But the man knows my name...and he's worried
Chrissay 0 #15 February 11, 2007 I like it. Me and my SO shop there and it works out for us. Any food that we do end up buying in bulk we separate into smaller portions right away and freeze the rest. It works out really well for us especially since we don't eat out anymore and cook at home so we end up eating everything we buy. We buy tp, garbage bags and such too and just fill a closet with them
RkyMtnHigh 0 #16 February 11, 2007 I suppose that buying bulk will help me plan meals a little better. I was just concerned that if I bought a lot of chicken breasts that they would get freezer burn before I had a chance to cook it. I'll give it a try and see how it goes. _________________________________________

And we wrap everything in wax paper (from sam's club of course!) first to also help prevent freezer burn.

Costco sells some higher end things that I just can't get elsewhere, has a nice wine selection, a really good meat department, good electronics, etc. Living alone, I rarely have a good excuse to buy food there, but for many other things, it's the best place around to shop. boinky 0 #25 February 12, 2007 I have a membership to Sam's and I like it there. But we don't have a Costco here, so I can't compare. It's only me that I shop for most of the time, so I'm selective on what "bulk" items I'll buy. I try to stick to things that I know I'll use on a regular basis. I find that dairy, eggs, Oscar Mayer hot dogs, chips, nuts are just a small list of things that I can buy cheaper there. I have NOT found that the meat department is that much cheaper, though. And it doesn't bother me to eat the same thing several days/weeks in a row, so buying refrigerated/frozen foods works great. For instance, I bought a 5 pound bag of fancy shredded monterey jack/colby cheese. I use cheese in just about everything. Eggs, salads, quesadillas, etc., so it won't be hard for me to use it up. The entire bag was less than $10. Had I bought it at a regular grocery store, even generics or a great sale (figuring $1.50 for 8 ounces), I would've paid around $15. So, you gotta' shop wisely and figure up front: 1. If you have room to store it. 2. Do you mind eating the same things a lot. 3. If you'll use it all up before it goes bad. Plus, I like shopping there because they carry a lot of unique items that you can't find anywhere else. Nina Are we called "DAWGs" because we stick our noses up people's butts?
