It also happens about 1000 times per year in Canada. In Newfoundland there are even huge signs on the highway that say: "Number of cars destroyed by impact with moose so far this year: [XXX]". livendive 8 #9 January 29, 2007 I was driving through western Montana a couple weeks ago and saw a moose on the side of the road. He made as if he was going to dart in front of me when I didn't have the traction to stop in time, but then moved back towards the woods. Got my heart pounding! I'm accustomed to seeing lots of deer (only hit one) and elk, but it was immediately very clear that hitting a moose would take damage and risk of injury to a whole new level. Those things are HUGE! His ass was pointed towards me as I went by, and I'd estimate it's height as being about 3/4 of the way up the windows of my pickup. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" BillyVance 34 #10 January 29, 2007 yikes... in no way do I want to ever come close to hitting one of them... I've hit a deer and missed 3 others in my years here in Alabama. Thankfully the damage was minor. The deer here are skinny and undersized. I wouldn't want to hit one in NY or PA though..."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban

matthewcline 0 #17 January 29, 2007 When I was stationed in Alaska my PLT SGT had a Hundia (sp?) and we happened to be zipping to a meeting at the near by AF base. We saw a moose just a standen' in the road and the PLT SGT tried to stop. We ended up sliding up under this big Ole' Bull Moose belly and he just "layed" on the roof as we slid another 20 or so yards off into a ditch. Once in the ditch we pitched a bit nose down and stopped hard. The moose slid on to the hood stood up and gave us the look that said "dumb ass PUMP the brakes not stab 'em" and sauntered off into the woods, unharmed. The car? Totaled. SkydiveJack 1 #18 January 30, 2007 I hit a moose (or elg- sp?) when I was driving in Norway many years ago. The hind quarters crushed the windshield and roof to within a couple of inches of my driverside head rest. The only reason I'm still alive is because I laid over to my right. I still got hit in the head and knocked out. Had to spend the night in a hospital and wear a neck brace for about a month. The car was a write off but the two people with me were not hurt. The moose wasn't so fortunate! It was basically my fault for going too fast. I came around a curve at night in a mountainous area. The moose was just standing there and my options were to drive into the cliff on the right, off the cliff on the left or lock'em up and go straight ahead. I got lucky! Living in Michigan now, I'm really careful when the deer are running!
