masterrig 1 #1 January 23, 2007 This past Saturday, the rancher I work for and I were feeding cattle. As always, we had our rifles with us, just in case we came across some feral hogs. We got the cattle fed and dropped the feed trailer and proceeded into the mountains in the pick-up to hunt pigs. I spotted some about 1000-yds. away, running along the base of a mountain, away from us. We chased after them, bouncing along the two-rut trail. We managed to get ahead of them when the rancher spotted one huge boar. "He's mine", he said. He aimed his 300-mag out the driver's window at the big boar about 175 yds. away and fired. We saw the pig go down, get-up and into the brush. About that time, he asked me if, I wanted to "go hnt a pig?" Hell yeah! We got out on foot to get a better look at him. Walking down into a rocky draw and up the mountain side, We spread-out. I stopped at one point to look around, in the area where we saw the boar go into the brush. About that time, from around a small pine tree came the wounded boar... straight at me. He was about 20-ft. away and I didn't have time to raise my rifle to my shoulder but fired from my hip. That boar spun away from me from being hit by the bullet and slowly moved away. As he got broad-side to me, I raised my rifle and got him in my scope and fired. He faltered, a bit and eased-off about 40-ft. and fell-over under a pine tree. I stood and watched him for a minute or so, when he raised his head... I fired again. That shot, finished him off. The rancher had hollered a couple times, in between shots if, I'd gotten him. When the gunsmoke settled, the rancher walked-up to me and asked where he was and I pointed about 60-ft. away. He estimated the dead, boar's weight at about 400 - 425 lbs. I told him exactly what had happened, where the boar came from around the tree, where I was standing at the time... the whole 9-yds. He told me, had I been slow on that first shot, it might have been a different story. Just another day on the job! Chuck

Some folks from the disease control center have been out and took samples and found these hogs are carrying 2-type of lice and some diseases I can't spell or pronounce. The big fear among local ranchers is, some of these diseases getting to their livestock. That's why we hunt them so hard. Chuck

These hogs are getting into the ranchers wallets. Also, they are carriers of some pretty nasty diseases and lice. edit to add: There are some interesting sites on the net, in regard to feral hogs and the damage they do. They 'root-up' water lines to stock tanks, eat baby lambs and deer fawn. Chuck
caress 0 #16 January 23, 2007 Well lets see you cant eat it, and you cant even feed it to anything else or well, that disease crud will infect, eeeeewwwww baby it is just going to lay there and smell! Boogers dont smell, they come from where you smell from silly. It is not right to eat them either but I see people do that on the freeway all the time guess we will just have to use the ol' pus pig for target practice. what if that dang thing would have bit you Masterrig? you would have gotten the cooties!-Caress I've learned.... I've been pidgeon shooting without earplugs and it hurt like hell. depends on your level of hearing... I don't wear plugs on the shooting range when I do my quals. I don't have any problems with hearing pain... just issues with being able to hear. kind of a viscious cycle... I don't wear plugs so I can hear commands and in the process, I make it harder for me to do so. Then again, this is a M16A2 I'm qualifying with, so the Db level is far different from the weapons you were using. Some people refrain from beating a dead horse.
