>I'm sure he doesn't want to sell someone an unairworthy rig.
?? Any rig that has not had its reserve repacked in the past 120 days is unairworthy. Likewise, if you remove the reserve to take the cypres out, it is then unairworthy. But I would have no problem buying such a rig, because an I+R will then make it airworthy again. Nor would I have any problem selling one of my used rigs without a reserve or AAD, even though a rig without a reserve is most definitely not airworthy.

I would argue that installing a cypres UNIT is not an alteration. Installing a cypres kit, or "retrofitting" the rig for a cypres, is definetly an alteration. Simply taking the AAD out is not an alteration to the TSO'd harness.
Point taken. I was assuming removal of the entire kit. My bad.

Agreed...
I see this as assembly/disassembly of components rather than an alteration (assuming you do not remove the "cypres-prep" items of the rig). However, I would recommend the assistance of a rigger. (Most would open the container and remove a cypres for little/no charge.) They can assist you in preserving the remaining value of the unit AND canopy now no longer in its protective covering...
50% of what riggers do for you is in addition to the strict by-the-book AIR. I have yet to talk with a rigger that did not teach me something or show me a new technique. Get to know them and you will learn a lot.

QuoteCan I remove my AAD myself or do I need a rigger to do it? I'm selling my container without the AAD and want to know if there is any trick to removing the Cypres. I don't want to have to take it to a rigger if I can do it myself.
I've done it twice for the 4 year and 8 year service. I didn't put it back in though.
How do ya like it Johnny?

to take a cypres out is very simple,it takes about a min from popping the reserve.however, once you break the seal that was put on it by the previous rigger, his warrenty of that repack becomes invalid.
if you want to take the cypres out,go ahead, but i would not reclose the rig unless you have a riggers rating.just leave it open and sell it on that way.the new owner most likely will want to get a complete check out of the rig anyway and you can get him cover the cost of the repack.

Travis, you are correct, anyone can do whatever they want to the gear...and not jump it. But the original poster alluded to selling the rig. I'm sure he doesn't want to sell someone an unairworthy rig. When the AAD was installed it was likely an alteration to the TSO'd harness. The removal of the AAD is then also considered an alteration. That was my point. Sorry, I should've been more clear.
