big move to the big city (nyc, that is)

Recommended Posts

ok, i'm planning a move to the nyc area in the very near future. i have no exact location in mind...brooklyn, queens, or nassau county are really as far as i've narrowed things down. what i've realized though, is that renting an apartment there is different then anywhere i've ever lived.

my question to you new yorkers and other fine, knowledgable people is: how do i not get screwed or scammed? anyone know anyone? HELP! [:/]:(

sounds silly but my price range is LESS then $1000 and i have 2 small dogs. i've found a few possibilities that met those requirements, so i know this is not me dreaming the impossible dream. i just need a few nudges in the right direction. thanks a bunch in advance!:)
Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!

Do you mean $1,000/month for rent or $1,000 to find a place, pay a deposit, maybe a broker fee, and a first month rent?

I would suggest starting to check Craigslist vigilantly and jump on every post you like right away. I paid out the nose for a broker to get my first apartment in Queens, but it was very easy, just walked into the office and said "this is what I want" and she took me right to it and two hours later I had a leese signed.

My other two apartments I found on Craigslist, but not until after having responded to 20 or 30 different posts and finding out a lot of people post a much rosier description of their apartment than it is in real life. However, I got amazing deals on the Craigslist apartments with no broker fees.

Best case scenario...someone on this lovely site happens to have an apartment available in their building and you can bypass both of the above options!
Killing threads since 2004.

I pm'd you the college essay answer

bullet points

Craigslist (right on J)

try to find sublet for just one month then see for yourself the areas you like(before a 12-24 month lease) I would say below 14th street or east Brooklyn - but that is just my taste. some links:

a link on the East Village

and one on 'B-Burg
