So many years later, how do you feel?

Recommended Posts

It's been a lot of years since I was in high school and had to think hard about your question. I had transferred from a Catholic school to a public school. There was a little group of boys who liked to pick-on me. I figured-out who the leader was and knocked him on his ass. That ended their 'bullying'. I left high school and never looked back... till now!

I got along with everyone and actually have good memories of HS. I was neither the bully or the bullied and didnt have a problem hanging out with any group. It is wierd to go back and see the people that are still around and have never even left the state.....

In my school, unless you were a confirmist, you weren't popular. [:/]

Looking back now I could care less. I had my friends and we had fun laughing at them and still had fun.

From From My page:

Guys: You remember that rich popular naturally athletic guy from high school? I hated him too. I think he works at the mall now.

I had thought about going to my high school reunion once the opportunity presented itself, because I was curious to see what became of people's lives; however, now I am sure I won't be attending the reunion when that day comes.

I was neither bullied, nor the bully ( I was mocked because of my beliefs though, occasionally) so I guess I have no need to see people as they were in high school, compared to how they are now.

edited to add: and Sprite, a lot of people live lives that may seem "rosy" to us, while we have no idea what kind of pain, desperation, and destruction is going on in their lives.

I want your best "I got them back by succeeding" stories!

***

The only thing you really have to succeed at is being YOU.

A bit cliche perhaps, but take it from an ole guy that has seen life from a lotta angles and with some help from my faithful Indian friend (really) kinda put it all in perspective.

If you try to compete or compare your life with someone else's you'll never be happy or satisfied.

Hating, disliking, envying...any kind of negative feeling you harbor toward anyone are a negative in YOUR life...why waste the time and energy on someone you don't care for...?!

Best example I've ever heard was a story from that U.S. woman runner in the L.A. Olympics who was expected to easily win her race, she was tripped half way through the run and sat there crying and screaming because all her hopes and dreams, everything she had worked so long for was dashed in an instant.

She said it was always her regret that she didn't just roll through the fall get up and keep running...

No way would she metal that race, but if she'd tried, she may not have finished last or DNF'd as she did.

There is pride in the gold surely, but imagine the pride one would have in falling down and still possibly beating some of the worlds BEST runners!
And there is honor in finishing strong what you started, with all you have left after life and the things in it try to 'trip' you up.

Find out who YOU really are, and work toward making THAT person complete...viola, you're a success.

Doesn't have anything to do with what you make, what you do, where you've been, who you sleep with...it's a inner contentedness that only comes through knowing in your heart of hearts that you are being the best person , by YOUR standards, that you can be.

As children we have an unbiased, blissfully ignorant "life is easy and I can do anything I want to" self confidence...ask yourself, would the child I was be proud of the adult I am?

I was bullied pretty much in the 4th through 9th grades, all at private schools. You know the story, rich snobby pricks think they got it made, lets pick on the deaf runt. :|

It bothered me for a long time. Thankfully I didn't have any problems in high school after I transferred to the public system, and ran cross country and track.

Now I'm married, own my own home, 3 cars in the driveway and have a little girl to look after. I've got it made. B| And I don't give a shit what happened to the rest of them pricks. Heck, I don't even remember any of their names. Don't need to. Sure, one or two of them may have a good life and grew up properly. I just don't care. I have my circle of friends, my family, and my fellow peeps on here and at the DZ. Thats all I need. :)

The one that I was able to find is gorgeous, she's soon to graduate college, she's in what appears to be a good relationship (based on her writing, comments, etc.), and her life is just peachy. Where's the justice in that?? She and her little gang of schoolgirls made my life horrible! Couldn't she have had the decency to at least sprout an ugly mole in the middle of her face or something?! :S Geez!

If you are waiting for some sort of cosmic justice to take place and right all previous wrongs it usually isn't going to happen. But I can certainly relate to that vindictive desire. I have on occasion seen people who have hurt me end up having their lives take a bad turn to my great delight, but on average I have wasted far too much energy feeling hatred for people who have moved on with their lives and do not put any mental energy into thinking of me.

As of late I have tried to remind myself of the fact that my feeling bitter towards them after the fact does them no harm. It simply distracts me from focusing on making my life better. I am not always capable of it but I do try to keep that in mind.
My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

Until my senior year in high school I was a good foot shorter and 30 lighter than the other guys so I got picked on a lot. One of the biggest offenders was Mark, he was on our football team. He was tall, beefy, handsome, and very popular. Everything I wasn't. I ran into him a couple of years later. He was fat, unkempt, drunk off his ass, and pissed because I was driving a nicer car than he was. B|

I wasnt chasing.... I said come to me and Ill make you feel better!!! :P :P

Well in that case...! :)

Thanks for all of your input, everyone. Excellent thoughts, and excellent advice. I just want to feel like I've "done something", which will come, I'm sure, when I graduate from college in May and start MY life thereafter. Until I feel like I've actually accomplished something big like that, I guess I still feel like that hurt little girl who was told she would never do anything, when I really start to think about it.

I don't think you should feel embarassed about that...some people weren't picked on ruthlessly from the day school started until the day they left. Some were and they can just get over it. I hold onto things...it's not a good thing to do, but it's just how we're built. Over half of your life so far was spent in school, and nearly half of mine so far...I don't think it's unnatural for impressions to remain.

All the home school kids I've met have been pretty weird. Everyone gets bullied, its part of growing up.

I know a now deceased family friend who got bullied mercilessly for years. Until he beat one of his bullies into ICU for a week with a steel frame back pack.

So not all bullies are as lucky as yours:P
