Why does food have to be so darn expensive?!?!?!?

Recommended Posts

Sorry to go all SC on ya, Sarah, but the US has pretty much the cheapest and most abundant food supply in the world.

Ditto what she said.

I don't know where you live, but if there is a Trader Joe's near where you live, try that. You'll find really good food at prices that are quite a bit lower than a mainstream grocery store...

You already have the cheepest most abundant suply of food in the world, what else do you want.

Food checkout day is February 2nd this year I believe. That means that the average American has earned enough by Feb. 2nd to buy all the food they will need the rest of the year. So you have 11 months of income to spend on everything but food.

US obesity rates have doubled in the past thirty years. I would say the problem for Americans is that food costs too little.

Are you kidding? I eat really well and don't spend much money on the food. Hell, I had a dinner party a couple of weeks ago where I cooked an incredible italian meal (with appetizers and decent wine) and I only spent about $50. I cooked for 10 and ended up having 9 over.

The only time food is expensive is when you eat out all the time or buy the pre-made frozen crap at the grocery store. If you cook yourself, even if you're using higher quality stuff, its not expensive at all.

I eat on about $20/wk. and I would love to get it down cheaper. Of course, my Ramen noodle stocks are way up and that helps offset things a little.

I found that this week, my food bill has been kept very low. Since Austinites can't drive on ice, and some stores didn't open, I had to eat what I had in the cabinets and/or... So far it's been freezer-burnt pizza rolls, Cup-A-Noodle, salads, pasta and more pasta... Oh, and orange juice... :S

And, in the non-food category, lots and lots of alcohol to keep me warm. ;) Buttery nipples, amaretto sours... Mmmm...

at the risk of getting this moved... because the US is doing its absolute best to deplete the 'cheap' manual labor pool..[:/]

Gardens are nice. Just replace your lawn with veggies, fruits, nuts and a cow or two and you'll be set. And like someone else said, can (and freeze) in preparation for the winter and you'll be completely set! :)
Seriously, if a person does home cooked meals they'll eat very well (and cheaply, too).

Clip coupons and shop smart.

I just started doing that and am saving a substantial amount.

Yep, what she said. Here's some specific ideas on "shopping smart":

-Buy and freeze meat when it's on sale at the supermarket or at Costco or Sam's Club. Package it well so it doesn't get freezer burn, or invest in a vacuum sealer. Package it so that you can take out just what you need for a meal and it'll be a lot more convenient to use.

-Use coupons, but pay attention to whether you're still getting the best deal. You may find that even with the coupon, the store brand is cheaper. Figure out if any of your local stores have double/triple coupon days and use that to your advantage.

-Eggs are a cheap, healthy source of protein, especially if you buy them when they're on sale.

-Buy whole chicken and cut it up or roast it. It's cheaper than boneless chicken breasts.

-Buy veggies / fruit in season as much as possible. You're going to pay $4.00 a pound for asparagus now, but it'll be $.99 in the summer.

-Stock up on non perishable stuff that you use often when it's on sale or at a warehouse store. Think about how you use something, though, to decide whether it's a good deal. The gallon size bottle of ranch dressing may not be a great deal if it's going to go rancid before you get halfway through it.

-Read the ads in your local newspapers and the junk mail ads that come from the grocery stores. Chances are someone's got a lot of stuff on sale that you need to buy that week. Shop around if you have the time and if the extra cost of driving to multiple stores doesn't erase any savings.

I find I cook at home more often if I make it really easy to do so. I try to have the basics around, and I keep a lot of stuff in the freezer so that when I'm downstairs eating breakfast I can peek in there and take out whatever I might want for dinner.

You shop like we do. :)
Wednesday is the big day around here, when the grocery ads come out. We see who has the staple items we need on sale, and stock up when we're shopping. We also cook from scratch and rarely eat in restaurants. I can have a spaghetti dinner with salad on the table in 30 minutes from word "Go." Thursday we're cooking a turkey, less than 5 bucks for a 20+ pound bird.

Now that's good eats.:)
