ltdiver 3 #1 January 12, 2007 A skydiving friend told me he heard about this yesterday. A co-worker (wuffo) asked me about it today. Looks like Scott Smith found a new way to make it into the media! (his last 'stunt' was riding another skydiver as his skyboard at our 2006 USPA Nationals when his board had to be cutaway and was lost). Quotehttp://cbs5.com/local/local_story_011202843.html SoCal Stuntman Makes History As 'Human Slingshot' (CBS) PERRIS, Calif. A seasoned California stuntman has made history as the first person to be catapulted 300 feet into the air, then parachute safely back to ground in a stunt taped for a Discovery Channel extreme stunt show. "I went along for a ride,"said Scott Smith, 44, of Perris, who indicated that he wants to do it again. "I'm not an addict, but I'm a stunt junkie," added Smith, who performed his feat for the show, "Stunt Junkies," at the Perris Valley Skydiving Center. After a series of mishaps plagued the crew, including torn ropes and a snagged sandbag dummy, crews worked all day to ensure the stunt could be safely completed, using test sand bag dummies of various weights, a block and tackle system, two cranes and two huge ropes. Originally intended to send Smith 700 feet into the air, the pulleys and counterweights could only send him up 300 into the air but that was more dangerous because it gave him less time to pull his parachute open, said Kelly McLear of "Stunt Junkies." The episode will air in March. The show is aired every Monday at 10 p.m. on the Discovery Channel. Smith is a longtime stuntman and stunt coordinator for movies, television and commercials, with 8,000 sky dives and 150 base jumps under his belt. His specialty is sky-surfing, and he did the sky-surfing stunt in the Vin Diesel movie "XXX." Dragontail 0 #7 January 12, 2007 Wow. I may be wrong but it looks like that was a regular skydiving rig and not a base rig (of course I'm kinda ignorant when it comes to base).

AggieDave 6 #11 January 12, 2007 Well, the video is about to play on the local news where I live here in TX. So its definately making the rounds nationally. Hopefully it'll help serve to get people out to the DZ, even if its for strange whuffo reasons, they'll be out there and maybe we'll get some real jumpers out of it and not just tourists.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." shermanator 4 #14 January 12, 2007 I'm curious, does Scott claim to be the first to do it? Or is that a media thing? .. I'm hoping Scott is not making that claim. strange that it kind of angers me that he is getting the credit for first. anyways.... he still owes beer!!CLICK HERE! new blog posted 9/21/08 CSA #
Amazon 7 #15 January 12, 2007 I saw that on TV today... that looked like fun.. I still think the idea I had when they were trying to sell off that surplus Aircraft Carrier would kicked ass... use the aircraft launch mechanism to toss your ass up to altitude. You would only just need to get the right angle.. and voila...if it can chuck an airplane.. just imagine what it could do with a skydiver

Scott dumped at VERY low speed. if this is the same scott smith as regional I would like to think he would NOT use a skydiving canopy for this.My photos My Videos

marsupyan 0 #18 January 12, 2007 Sorry guys but is not the first one to do that stunt, watch on the web for Jean Marc Mouligne he did the same in september 2005 in south France. so never claim something before you take some information

I think he qualifies as the first skysurfer to lose his board during the jump and get back together with it. Still, JT should probably stick to swooping.
