Can you get a lower interest rate on a car loan than the CD savings rate?

CD rates are still shit comparatively speaking. You get a better interest rate from the HSBC online account unless you have 10k to do nothing with for at least 18 months.

Try the Mazda Speed3. My son just bought one, after being quite convinced he was going to buy something else.

And the best way to decide whether to keep saving is just to work out what the payments vs. costs would be of doing it each way. Really.

*cough* Audi A3 FTMFW! and don't even try to compare it to a GTI. completely different when you start to compare quality of manufacturing and fit & finish.

Seeing as how they are the same chassis, and are practically made side-by-side, VW assembly standards are the same in terms gap tolerances. Same company, same engines, same cars.

Buying a new car is a great way to build/rebuild credit but not if the principal is beyond your debt/income ratio.

$20K plus tag/taxes on a 6% loan for 60 mos is going to ring you for $415/mo. That's up there for a VW. Of course, it's all relative to income, if you're taking home $1000/wk, it's not that big a deal.

I'm getting 5.5% with Countrywide, 90 day CD, $10k min. Good stuff.

Ya i'm trying to get my payments closer to $350 and if i get $800 on my trade-in I'd be suprised.

Don't forget, on a VW, or anything European at this point, getting a finance rate below 5% is going to require some really, really, good credit. If you have lots of dings, you're facing closer to 9% or higher, roughly $460-500/month.

Don't forget that sales tax is going to add another $1000. With 7.9%, and a done deal at $24K before taxes, etc., you're going to need to put down $9000-10000 to get your payment under $350.

Um... you could do something totally radical and not have any payments. Keep saving until you can pay cash... all of my future cars will be that way. Owing people is stupid, your income is the fastest growing asset you have - save it!

People in my grandmothers generation never had car loans or credit cards to buy lots of new stuff and made it just fine, for some odd reason our generation has an inflated sense of entitlement and we need new and there are lots of 'financing offers' to help with that.

So much so that many people are tens of thousands of dollars in debt and living paycheck to paycheck.

They should be scared when social security runs out and they have $50k in debt and no help from uncle sam toward retirement...

And that's why I'm working hard to get out of debt and then to start my serious savings. I already have a great retirement plan setup and am putting money in it too. At this point I have no intention on hoping the government is there for me in the end. I know it won't be, so it'll have to be what I've done to provide for myself.

My rule of thumb for my next car purchase is to have 1/2 of the car to be paid with cash in hand. The car after that will be the full cash in hand purchase. It would be nice to be able to self-insure my vehicles as well. Have enough money to cover an accident and only carry the state required liability. Obviously I don't have that now, but someday that is my overall goal. All it takes is planning, devotion to your planning and time.

That was going to be my next suggestion. I wish all of us could go and pay cash for it all. I recently paid cash for my latest new auto purchase. Something neat about being free and clear from the get-go.

Hasn't it taken you, oh, about, 10 years to save that 4 grand? iirc you were driving that beater little station wagon (oh sorry, the shaggin' wagon) when I met you because you were Saving For A Car? :S I say run don't walk to the dealer - you may be too old to drive by the time you save enough for that new VW. :|
