I have corporate NAV on both of my computers (I get it through the Govt, sorry fireflytx ) but I'd be curious to know what he recommends. a free alternative to NAV or McAffey is Avast's home edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html). I was using it before I realized that the Govt had a license that allowed me to install Corporate NAV on my home PCs.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... I just hate the system resources taken up from three separate spy ware programs, norton system works that doesn't do anything for xp these days, and norton internet protect suite too...system overload! NAV for anti-virus, windows firewall behind a router, windows defender for spyware, google toolbar for popups...should take care of her! Being in the security industry I can say a few things about AV and other programs out there in security. You almost always get what you pay for. The free compainies tend to be hours or days late in getting detections wrote for most the newest viruses. Most do not have dedicated global teams that are doing AV detection writing 24 hours a day. There is one vendor out there that they only will write a detection outside their 9-5 hours if you pay them for it. There is a difference in between AV protection and system protection. Most of the better AV programs out there also include things like buffer overflow protection, IPS signatures and daily updates. BOF protection from one vendor actually mitigated the risk from the last round of the MS patches completely with out even needing to install a patch to fix the hole. Instead they only do major upgrades every 2-3 years and tend to have a much better product because of the increased time to test each product. I went to the paid version of AVG Antivirus/firewall. As stated in an earlier post, they also have a free version. You can go to their site to see what extras you get in the paid version. I'm a programmer, and I worked in IT when I was in college. I just use Firefox and keep Windows up to date. No need to worry if you just be careful. I did read an article that said AOL's new AV software is very good in the free sector, but only because it uses Kaspersky's detection engine which is one of the best out there. Other than that I would recommend Avast over AVG. AVG just isn't very good in tests. Safe surfing. If you are a company and want to know where to spend your IT dollars typically you look at the Gartner Magic Quadrant chart and see where things rank. Neither Trend, AVAST or Norton were in the leaders quadrant. For home systems you are living fairly dangerously if you are not keeping some level of firewall/AV on a system. Last week a 0 day attack was released against Internet Explorer and an exploit was out and affecting systems for 3 days before MS released a patch to address it. I do happen to like Pest PAtrol, but thats only since CA bought the company that wrote it instad of developed it in house.
