pinkfairy 0 #28 October 1, 2006 QuoteAnyone know where I can get cheap used software? I hate paying $60 for things that I shouldn't need just cause there are assholes in this world that want to fuck my computer up Why use an inferior operating system that isn't built for security from the start, but has security as "options" that you can buy later? Why use an operating system that need regular reboots to work properly? Why use something that hasn't even got a proper "kill"-command? How can you stand all those obtrusive messages that windows gives while you are working? Are you a gamer, a music/film pirate or need to run some special accountant software that only runs on windows? Yeah, I work in IT, and with windows, but I have worked both with Mac and Linux, and some operating systems require more of your attention than others. Windows works fine if you are in a protected office network with proffessionals who can look after your computer. Windows works well if you're good with computers. I could'nt be bothered with having windows at home. I just want to touch my keyboard and have something that works. Even if I don't do every update on time or do regular virus scans or hard disk defragmentations. These things are boring, and the whole point of having a computer, is delegating boring work to it. What about trying: http://www.ubuntu.com/ or http://www.novell.com/linux/ or even, if you can afford it: http://www.apple.com/ Whatever you do, though, do not get "winantivirus pro". This is an obtrusive malware designed to trick you into giving money to the ones who made it. I't has a flashy GUI, but doesn't do anything else. Oh, by the way: you windows people can go ahead and throw tomatoes on me now. Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet. I'm a BIG, TOUGH BIGWAY FORMATION SKYDIVER! What are you?

I wouldn't blink at the thought of rebuilding any of my systems from scratch. Most people aren't in the same situation, certainly not most businesses. AV / antispyware reduces the lowest common denominator effect of having less computer-savvy people on staff. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Elisha 1 #30 December 21, 2006 ***Update*** For those of you with AVG, the free version is expiring on 1/15/07. Which of the following listed are the best? http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html http://www.zonelabs.com
PhreeZone 20 #31 December 21, 2006 Avast was almost 4 days late to the market with their latest Phillis varent detection compared to major market players. The thing is that it costs money to do AV detections 24/7 so the trade off is to get free AV software you have to be willing to lower your budget for fast detections.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

I've never paid for AV software for my home computer - why start now? Someone on another forum just told me that AVG 7.5 FREE exists - just hard to find on their site. I'll check it out. PhreeZone 20 #33 December 21, 2006 It doesn't... I read the daily press releases every day and they keep mentioning that ALL free versions will deactivate in Jan. Well, There is always Trends online scanner. It at least has the most current detections. Its better then nothing.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

LyraM45 0 #35 December 22, 2006 well... you can try DC++ or some other program to get a cracked version of it. But that would be stealing.... kinda.... and of course I legally can't tell you to go get that program and use it to get norton. Of course I wouldn't know anything about this, which is why I'm telling you about it..... Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)
