bmcd308 0 #27 December 18, 2006 I am pleased to say that buyers of my gear (which is listed in the Classifieds) have generally asked me for the serial numbers prior to buying. It is my hope that they are doing that in order to check the gear against the stolen gear database on this site. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
MagicGuy 0 #28 December 18, 2006 So messed up. The thought that a fellow skydiver would do this makes me feel shitty. I hope it turns up, keep an eye on classifieds section (if the person is dumb enough to list them for sale here) and even on places like Craig's List and eBay. Maybe someone's conscious will get to them and the stuff will turn up. If not, they got some bad karma coming their way.
Richards 0 #29 December 18, 2006 QuoteQuoteDo you think it was a fellow sky diver, or some one just walking around? I suppose a theif does not have to be in the community to steal and resell gear but i amagine he would have to sound like he knew something about the sport otherwise he would sound fishy when describing the gear to a potential buyer. My guess is that the people who do this are members of the community QuoteI hope ...the person who stole it suffers a painful end!!! I agree I guess that it is nice and all to have a stolen gear database on this website but unless there is a universal stolen gear registry that all dropones check against then this will continue. It might be quite simple. Whenever johnny butplug buys used gear then the dropzone owner has to immediately check it against a database. If Johnny goes to a new dropzone then the first thing they do is check his gear against the registry. Not perfect but it will make things somewhat more difficult for lowlife theives My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within. dbattman 0 #31 December 18, 2006 They could very well be headed overseas. For sale overseas the 5 complete sets would be worth 20 to 30 times pawning the TV and DVD player, and much harder to track down.
caspar 0 #32 December 19, 2006 QuoteThis issue seems to keep popping up. Is there any sort of large scale effort being made to make the resale of stolen gear more difficult. Is there some sort of database where people can do a check on gear that they are thinking of purchasing? If dropzones would support this by having all new (used) gear on the DZ checked against a database it would make the business of steal and resell more difficult. would a new forum where people could post a thread with gear details/locations/pics etc be that hard to make? every jumper knows dropzone.com, seems like the most logical place for a stolen gear database of sorts."When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading." Something like this one? USPA also maintains lists and publishes them regularly in Parachutist. Get the word out there so people can keep an eye on the classifieds and ebay. And keep an eye on them yourself. Let all the regional DZs know so they'll be on the lookout as well."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. jimmytavino 16 #34 December 19, 2006 I've jumped at many different dzs . and most are similar in that any HUGE number of people can be on site during operating hours. Between Locals, visitors, students and their various "entourages" sometimes hundreds of people can be milling around... Now many places "close down completely" after dark....The DZOs say,,, "Ok we're done for the day,,,, you don't have to go home,,, but you CAN'T stay here...."... bad idea... IMHO Other places allow for onsite camping, RVs and bonfire type activities... ( and ALWAYS,,, someone or two people seem to stay entrenched there, till the sun comes up....) Is your DZ a place where Everyone Leaves by midnight or 1 or 2 AM ???? If so, your DZ and all others like it, - need to be vigilant about 4 and 5 AM interlopers. thieves. scoundrels,,,, skydivers ( I hope Not ) or others,, who possibly have cased the place all day long, scoped out what is where etc etc, and return under the cover of darkness with tools to break in,,,,hell a crowbar, bolt cutters, or even a cutting torch, can be easily used , if there is no one around to monitor the place and be wary....Iv'e never visited your DZ but was just wondering if what I described is possible... Better to allow trusted jumpers and staff to stay on site 24 hrs/day, whenever the daytime activity level is high...in order to protect against such nightime intrusions. either that or have the local camera gurus set up some type of surveilance cameras,,, and then NOT... I repeat NOT make that information commonly known to ANYone.... "C'mon Mo-f&%k ers... you wanna Play?????? " "then lets get to it"... (nothing like a recorded tape to Incriminate the cleverest crook) Thievery of any kind is Foul....and losing ones rig is just heartbreaking... May all the gear be recovered and the bastards prosecuted... sadly this is further justification to keep your personal gear with you,,,at all times...post jumping.. I.E. in your locked vehicle or in your locked home, rather than in a DZ hangar, locker classroom etc. even if you are staff, even if it IS the weekend, even if you are going to jump it the next day... gear that is worth more than the van i lock it in is worth being careful with... good luck...to you and the others. jmy
BillyVance 34 #35 December 19, 2006 QuoteAll 5 rigs, cameras, helmets, altimiders, etc.. were locked up in the hanger. Someone cut the locks off with a bolt cutter. Not the first DZ that has happened at... It happened in Pell City, AL a few years ago. Staff gear was taken, and most recovered from an apartment in Birmingham. Not sure how the police got wind of that, but it was a good ending."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
ladyflyer77 0 #36 December 19, 2006 We do have a camp site for people if they prefer to stay at the DZ itself. The crazy thing about all this is we have campers that stay near the parking area (about 500' from the hanger). We were all there that night sleeping in our campers. We had our routine bonfire going and when we called it a night, got up the next morning we then realized the burglary. Our dogs didn't even bark. This is one of the many reasons this has to be someone that has jumped with us. If I stand on my tip toes, I can see the weekend from here!
ladyflyer77 0 #37 December 19, 2006 The Greene Co. Sport Parachute Center of Bardstown Ky. was the victim of a significant robbery on December 16th-17th. During the late hours or early a.m. Some one broke into the hanger and stole several people's personal gear and cameras. They also stole student gear and radios and transmitter. We were unable to let students jump Sunday who would have really like to. It is apparent that the thief knew what he or she was after. They obviously had cased the place and knew something about skydiving and gear. Several people who lost their gear have no insurance. The cameras were a source of income and had personal as well as retail value. If anyone has any clues or evidence to what has happened please call us. We are offering a $1,500.00 reward and maybe more to anyone who can lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who committed this crime. This crime was not just stealing .. Not only has it prevented new jumpers from jumping which has a large affect on a business that has been around 35 years it has already prevented up coming new jumpers from jumping Sunday..... because the radios were taken. This person had to know us...be around..be friend us....and case the place...probably has jump experience..how much we don't know. This person Took Gear which was not only valuable, but a source of participation in a sport the people who owned it loved. All this right before Christmas. We are doing all we can to find the gear and cameras. Hoping that it will all show up somewhere soon....If this letter reaches the person who did this Please return it...leave it in a cart at Wal-Mart or somewhere where we could find it. Other wise we will search..internet, ebay, run name checks of all who have jumped here recently, search pawn shops long after gear has been replaced!!!!!! This was a cruel and selfish crime... Everyone receiving this letter please check your local pawn shops...call friends...check e-bay...help us find the person who did this!! report any findings to the Bardstown Sheriff Dept # 502-348-1840 **call Kenn at the Parachute Center for descriptions 502-348-9531 or Home 270-865-6577 THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION and HELP!!! chaoskitty 0 #38 December 19, 2006 Really sorry to hear about this. I've pointed all of my Nashville and Knoxville area friends to this thread, as well as local riggers around TN, AL, and GA. Hopefully we can help you get your gear back.
ladyflyer77 0 #39 December 19, 2006 Thanks. Every little thing helps in big ways right now. I know I will probably never see my gear again. I just hope I do. I love this sport and I don't have the money to buy all new gear. This hurts in many ways. If I stand on my tip toes, I can see the weekend from here! ladyflyer77 0 #41 December 19, 2006 I just want to say thank you to all of you that is helping. Getting the word out, watching ebay, whatever it is you are doing, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH! All of you are one of the main reasons why I love this sport so much. We all look after one another. Or at least most of us do. If I stand on my tip toes, I can see the weekend from here! gonzalesna 0 #43 December 19, 2006 have you found a pic of the gear yet? I don't jump much... right now I'm just trying to stay current, but if you can get pics, I'll post 'em at Perris (my DZ) and pass em out over the Christmas boogie. Probably a good time to pass 'em out. I know you're on the other side of the country, but nowadays, it doesn't take long for things to move great distances. Let me know if there's any ideas you come up with for locating your gear and I'll try and make it work. Good luck man. Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.
ladyflyer77 0 #44 December 19, 2006 Do anyone know how long it takes for DropZone to post my gear as stolen? I posted it 2 days ago and its still not up there. If I stand on my tip toes, I can see the weekend from here!
ladyflyer77 0 #45 December 19, 2006 I'm working on the pics. I have some friends checking their pics out. I will post them on here and also am sending them out to DZ's and riggers as soon as I can. skydivr 0 #46 December 19, 2006 Now, that SUCKS. It's gotta be a skydiver or 'hanger-on". Bardstown is too small a place, where 'everybody know's your name', for it not to be someone known to the drop zone. And that's the part that sucks the most; that someone you know stole your stuff. I hope the culprit is caught fast because I hate to think of everyone there being suspicious of everyone else. I hope the culprit gets the living daylights kicked out of him (or her). You could look at the bright side I guess - an excuse to buy new gear! P.S. ladyflyer77 0 #47 December 19, 2006 I know, that's the part that sucks and more importantly, HURTS! The possibility of someone I have jumped with or talked to at the DZ doing this to us. And you are absolutely right, until this is solved, we all will look at eachother differently now. I hate that because everyone at the DZ has become a member of my family. I just pray its someone I don't know. That way it won't hurt as bad kicking their ass! If I stand on my tip toes, I can see the weekend from here! chrismgtis 0 #49 December 20, 2006 QuoteThis past Saturday all of my shit was stolen from the DZ I jump at. Among others gear as well. This is for the person or persons that took my shit. You better hope I don't find out who you are. You better hope we all get our gear back if you know whats best for you. I would say you have my blessings to torture this person when you find them, Hostel style. I won't tell anyone. I hate thieves.
