wingnut 0 #1 December 7, 2006 okay so i was taking moron math (lowest math class at school) (cuz i can't remeber how to do math since i was in high school 8 years ago) and took the final on tueday and this problem has been bugging the shit out of me, only one i wasn't sure on that it wasn't because i couldn't remebr the damn formula or something.. so here it is will write it out since i don't know how to do superscript here... [17(x squared)] minus 2x = 0 that is again [seventeen (x squared)] minus 2x equals zero.. only thing i could come up with is that x equals 0.... but for some reason i want to think i am wrong... ______________________________________ "i have no reader's digest version"
BlueSkiesKel 0 #2 December 7, 2006 if i copied your problem right.. 17x^2 -2x=0 the first step is to factor out the x so you have x(17x-2)=0 so that means either x=0 or 17x-2=0 which means x=0 or 2/17 (yeah i'm a math geek)
wingnut 0 #3 December 7, 2006 damn, maybe i'll get half credit... 3 points is better than none... and now that you did that i feel even dumber for not even realizing it......i keep asking myself why i picked a major that requires calc 4...... oh well ______________________________________ "i have no reader's digest version"
BlueSkiesKel 0 #4 December 7, 2006 dont feel dumb, its ok, some people just look at numbers and it makes sense, unfortunately for some reason my brain does that just remember..first rule in solving equations..look for factoring out terms.. makes for simplifying them a lot easier good luck! Actually you could use the following formula for any equation having this format: ax2 + bx + c = 0 x will equal: -b + or - the square root of (bsquared - 4ac) 2a In this case a = 17 b = -2 and c = 0 since c = 0 you could eliminate the "4ac" bit, so the root of bsquared is just b, but positive. x = (2 + 2 ) / 34 = 0.1176 (or 2/17) or x = (2 - 2)/ 34 = 0 Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
 jtval 0 #22 December 7, 2006 this thread makes my balls itch.
