Subaru Baja vs. Outback

Recommended Posts

Any real world experiences with either of these cars? I was all set to buy an Outback wagon, but there's a dealer here with a bunch of Baja's sitting around gathering snow. I think I can make a better deal on the Baja. The Baja isn't being built anymore, so I am a *little* concerned about that. I'm thinking about either the 2006 Baja Turbo, or the 2007 Outback 2.5i wagon (non-turbo). I like the turbo engine in the Baja, but am not sure I want to spend a bunch of money on something being phased out. And I just now found an '05 Passat wagon with the V6, AWD, and 10k miles for about the same price as the scoobies. I hate car shopping...

Thx!

I don't have any real world experience with either, but the Baja shares the same engine and drivetrain as the Legacy/Outback models.

Do some poking around on Edmunds.com and read some of the user reviews. Some of them, you'll find, are quite comprehensive.

In my extensive reading about cars in general, I've read of no quality issues with the Baja. If you decide to pursue it, you should be able to get a loaded Turbo w/Leather for under $25,000. Good luck.

I own a Subaru outback and I love the car. Never thought I would own anything that looked like a station wagon but this isn't a typical station wagon. All wheel drive and it handles great in every condition you drive in.
As far as a Baja goes I have a few friends withthem but i just think they looks funny. Is it a car or is it a truck ? If you are going with a turbo then do it right and just get the Impreza WRX STi.

the sti is a straight up balls to the wall fast ass car... totally different from what this guy is looking for. a turbo can be for a normal car... it can actually be more fuel efficient.
i think the baja is pretty much useles.. id go with the station wagon. my gf. owns a subaru dealer and reccomends the same thing... resale with the baja will also be much more difficult...
their must be some reason they stopped making the baja after just a few years... the outback has been around or a while.

It wasn't selling, hence this guy's dealer having a lot full of them... ;)

THEY ARE THE EXACT SAME CAR.

almost entirely. i worked at a dealer for 3 years, selling 03-06 cars, and the Baja is a badass car. it has all the problems the 06 outback had, because THEY ARE THE SAME CAR.

i relly wanted a baja, i have a tshirt and a baseball hat with baja on them. it is a cool car. the cabin is a very small amount louder on highwa than the outback, but not terrible.

SUBARU is the greatest car out there. my family has had 6 different models of subarus in the last 15 years, and me, and my sister drive the outback still. other sister has a legacy sedan.
i have problems with the imprezas, but the STI and WRX are pretty amazing vehicles. if you do get a WRX, it better be the blue one with gold wheels, its the only version that looks cool.

get the baja though, its a cool car, if i ever get money again, it will be a baja.

people think it was ugly, the car had no problems (as in maintenense) but if you looking for something like a normal car to have a normal day, the Baja aint your car.

I think its a cool car. but of course, if YOU dont like something different, BURN IT! put it on the Black list!

Hey Calvin...what problems did the 06 have?

I kinda like that the Baja looks different than the elevetybillion Outbacks out there, but I agree about the resale value. I'm heading to the dealer tomorrow to check out the Baja. I thought about the WRX / STI, but I kind of like having cheap insurance and no points on my licence. :D

I drive a blue '04 Subaru Impreza WRX STi, and I replaced the exhaust and ECU, among other things. It's fast, I've gotten almost the maximum allowable tickets and points, and I pay around $300 a month for insurance.

I thought about getting the gold wheels, but the first one off of the truck/ship that I got didn't have them.

there is a guy here in boulder that makes magnesium wheels, crazy lightweight, and super cool. i think they are only 290 USD a peice as well. a pretty good deal. and they are available in Subaru Gold.

I'm on my second Suby. The first was an 83 G L wagon and it took my wife and I everyplace we ever wanted it to go. Everywhere. I was first sold on Subs back in 1977. My friend had one and it had about a million miles on it. One night we got drunk and rolled it. SSmashed all the windows and landed on the top. Being as drunk as we were, we were not seriously hurt. This happened in town so we had to get the hell out of there. We rolled it back over on its wheels and we drove it out of there. I was sold. Now I own a 2003 LL Bean Outback with all the bells and whistles. Probably more bells than a person really needs but we absolutly love it. Road trips, into the mountains, to the DZ. It just doesn't matter. It does it all. We have friends that own the Baja, but I don't really know that much about it. To me it seems like you lose alot of space with a tiny little truck bed rather than the actual wagon. WE can load the dogs and or our camping gear and hit the road. Plus you have the racks on top for things that don't fit in the car. Ladders and lumber and such. Bottom line is Suby's are great cars. It all depends on taste and whats practical for your needs. Shit, I can't believe that I've reached the age of practicality. I traded in an 88 Formula Firebird, T-Tops, 5 speed with all the bells and whistles for our Sub.

I may be getting old but I got to see all the cool bands.

I've had many over the years. I never seemed to buy one that did not have over 100,000 miles on them. By then they would need the regular things,brakes/ the rubber boots need to be replaced about then, I had a brat, loved it too, my wife has a new forester now. she had an 88 turbo 1.8liter 4 door we liked, but down here (houston)it gets too hot and the stuff under the hood would go bad faster, to say nothing of the paint on the hood above the turbo turning color, I think the new ones have a scoop for that now, I had to put my own on. Ive replaced the motors in half the time it would take to replace many others.I would recomend them to anyone, just figure out what you want to do in the car and buy that type subaru, We would be in the baja now, except that I have an 88 gmc 4x4 to haul/pull stuff.
Now every time i go out and see the crap my Bride is hauling around,in the new car, i wish i had gotten her the truck, and dumped the guzzler
